History

Stanford University is a private research university located in Stanford, California. Founded in 1885 by Leland and Jane Stanford, the university has a rich and storied history.

Leland and Jane Stanford founded the university in memory of their only son, Leland Stanford Jr., who died of typhoid fever in 1884 at the age of 15. The Stanfords decided to use their wealth to create a university that would "promote the public welfare by exercising an influence on behalf of humanity and civilization."

The university opened its doors in 1891 with a small group of students and a faculty of ten. The first president of the university was David Starr Jordan, a noted biologist and educator who had previously served as the president of Indiana University.

Over the years, Stanford has grown into one of the world's leading research universities. It has produced 30 Nobel laureates, 171 members of the National Academy of Sciences, and 109 members of the National Academy of Engineering. Its faculty and alumni have founded many successful companies, including Google, Hewlett-Packard, Nike, and Yahoo!.

Stanford has also played an important role in shaping the cultural and political landscape of the United States. The university was a centre of the counterculture movement in the 1960s, and its faculty and students played an active role in the civil rights movement, the anti-war movement, and the environmental movement.

Today, Stanford is home to more than 16,000 students and employs more than 2,000 faculty members. Its campus covers over 8,000 acres and includes some of the most advanced research facilities in the world. The university remains committed to its founding mission of promoting public welfare by advancing knowledge and fostering innovation.
