History
Surrey Business School is part of the University of Surrey, which was granted its Royal Charter in 1966. The University itself evolved from Battersea Polytechnic Institute, established in 1891 in London. Battersea Polytechnic became Battersea College of Technology in 1956 and was designated as a College of Advanced Technology in 1957.
When the decision was made to expand and relocate, the institution moved to Guildford, Surrey, where it became the University of Surrey. From the early years, the University offered courses in economics and management within various departments, laying the foundation for what would later become a dedicated business school.
Over time, as the demand for business and management education increased, the University developed more focused programmes in these areas. Business and management courses expanded, supported by research and partnerships with industries in the South East of England. These developments led to the creation of a defined business and management school within the University structure. While the exact year of its formal naming as Surrey Business School is not clearly recorded in the public domain, it became recognised as a distinct academic unit offering undergraduate, postgraduate, doctoral and professional development programmes in business-related fields.
In the following years, Surrey Business School introduced a wide range of degree programmes. Undergraduate options were developed to include accounting and finance, business management with specialisations, and international business. Joint language and business degrees were also offered. The School expanded into the fields of hospitality, tourism, and transport management, reflecting the University’s broader strengths in these areas. The postgraduate offering was also broadened to include areas such as business analytics, digital marketing, entrepreneurship, and financial management. The Surrey MBA became a key feature of the postgraduate portfolio, attracting professionals looking to advance in leadership and global business roles.
The School developed strong links with industry and included placement opportunities and employer engagement within the curriculum. It partnered with the University’s Research Park and established ties with local and international organisations to support entrepreneurship and research collaborations. The School joined professional and academic networks, becoming a member of the Chartered Association of Business Schools and the European Foundation for Management Development. It also became a signatory of the UN Principles for Responsible Management Education.
Surrey Business School focused increasingly on research, with major areas including digital economy, business analytics, behavioural finance, sustainability, visitor economy, and organisational behaviour. It created centres such as the Centre for Digital Economy and the Human Insight Lab. In the 2021 Research Excellence Framework (REF), it ranked 19th in the UK overall for business and management studies, 10th for research outputs, and 16th for research impact.
The School earned accreditation from both the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) and the Association of MBAs (AMBA). It also received the Athena SWAN Bronze Award for its efforts in promoting equality. In recent years, the School revised its MBA curriculum, increased global academic partnerships, and enhanced its digital teaching methods. As of 2024, it is ranked in the top 50 worldwide for business administration and top 100 for management in the Shanghai Global Rankings. The School is currently led by Professor Iis Tussyadiah and continues to operate from the Rik Medlik Building in Guildford, offering business education and research aligned with global needs and industry developments.
