The company was formerly known as Allmerica Financial Corp. and changed its name to The Hanover Insurance Group, Inc. in December 2005. The Hanover Insurance Group, Inc. was founded in 1852 and is headquartered in Worcester, Massachusetts.

The Hanover Insurance Group was founded in 1852 in Hanover, PA as the Hanover Fire Insurance Company of Pennsylvania. Over the past century, the company has grown both organically and through acquisitions to become one of the largest insurance companies in the United States.
