Summary

Johns Hopkins University (JHU) is a private research university located in Baltimore, Maryland, USA. Founded in 1876, JHU is the first research university in the United States, and it remains a world leader in teaching and research today. The university's first president, Daniel Coit Gilman, emphasized the importance of both teaching and research, and this vision still guides the university's mission today.

JHU offers a wide range of undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs in arts and music, humanities, social and natural sciences, engineering, international studies, education, business, and the health professions. Distinguished professors mentor students, and the university's Applied Physics Laboratory has made JHU the nation's leader in federal research and development funding every year since 1979.

JHU has a diverse and accomplished alumni network that includes famous conservationists and authors, winners of Oscars, Grammys, Emmys, and Pulitzer Prizes, and even a past U.S. president.

History

The Johns Hopkins University was founded in 1876 in Baltimore, Maryland, thanks to a generous donation of $7 million from the philanthropist Johns Hopkins. His vision was to establish a university that would combine the best elements of a research institution and a liberal arts college. The university opened its doors to students on February 22, 1876, with an initial enrollment of just 132 undergraduates and 44 graduate students.

The early years of the university were marked by the establishment of groundbreaking programs and the recruitment of renowned scholars. In 1878, the School of Medicine was established, and the Johns Hopkins Hospital, which was designed to serve as a teaching hospital for the medical school, opened its doors in 1889. The School of Nursing was established in 1889, and the School of Public Health followed in 1916. These schools have since become world-renowned for their research and academic excellence.

The university also played a significant role in the advancement of higher education for women. In 1907, it became the first major American university to admit women on equal terms with men. In 1920, the university established the Bryn Mawr School for Women, which was designed to provide women with a high-quality education in the liberal arts.

Throughout the 20th century, the university continued to expand and innovate. It played a critical role in the development of the atomic bomb during World War II, and in the post-war years, it established numerous research centers, including the Applied Physics Laboratory and the Space Telescope Science Institute. Today, the university is consistently ranked as one of the top research universities in the world, with renowned programs in fields ranging from biomedical engineering to international studies.
