History

Established as the State University of Western Australia in 1911, the University of Western Australia (UWA) was the first university in Western Australia and the fifth in Australia. The idea of establishing a university in Western Australia was initially suggested in the 1870s, but it wasn't until 1909 that the State Government passed an act for its establishment. The University was opened on February 21, 1913, by Sir John Winthrop Hackett, who had contributed funds for the construction of the University's first building, Winthrop Hall. In its early days, UWA offered courses in Arts, Science, and Engineering, and later established a Faculty of Agriculture in 1918, which later became the Faculty of Agriculture, Forestry, and Horticulture. During World War II, UWA played a crucial role in the war effort by hosting military training programs, conducting military research, and sending staff and students to join the armed forces. After the war, UWA experienced significant growth, with the establishment of new faculties and departments. In the 1960s, UWA founded a Faculty of Economics and Commerce, which later became the UWA Business School. Currently, UWA is a highly-regarded research university, with a reputation for excellence in teaching and research, and is a member of the Group of Eight, which is comprised of Australia's leading research universities.
