History

The University of Hyderabad was established in 1974 by an Act of Parliament with the primary objective of promoting postgraduate education and research in India. The vision was to create a centre of excellence that would contribute significantly to the intellectual and cultural development of the country. Initially offering a small number of postgraduate programmes, the university quickly expanded its academic offerings to include a wide array of disciplines, encompassing the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, engineering, and management.

In its early years, the university faced the challenge of building its infrastructure and academic programmes from scratch. However, it rapidly developed into a leading institution, thanks to its strong emphasis on research and innovation. The establishment of several specialised research centres and the introduction of interdisciplinary programmes have been key milestones in its growth. These centres focus on cutting-edge research in areas such as nanotechnology, cognitive science, and climate change, fostering a collaborative and forward-thinking academic environment.

According to university rankings, the University of Hyderabad is positioned as follows: internationally, it ranked 601-650 in the QS World University Rankings in 2020. In India, it was ranked 20th overall and 10th among universities by the NIRF in 2023 and was also ranked by Outlook India among universities in 2020.

This commitment is reflected in its consistent ranking among the top universities in India.
