Weight Watchers was founded in 1961 by Jean Nidetch. After months of yo-yo dieting, Nidetch began to collaborate with the New York City Board of Health's Obesity Clinic to teach monthly meetings in a Queens home. At these meetings, attendees would share stories, recipes, and progress, while Nidetch provided weight loss advice based on her personal experience. In 1963, Weight Watchers held its first international meeting in Quebec, Canada and expanded globally during the years that followed. By 2013, Weight Watchers completed a re-branding and unveiled a new wellness strategy. In 2020, Weight Watchers sold a majority stake in its business to KKR.
