History

Williams Companies was founded in 1908 as a small natural gas company in Kansas. The company began to grow in the 1920s and 1930s with the discovery of new natural gas reserves in the region. In the 1940s, Williams expanded its operations to include interstate pipelines and began transporting natural gas across the country.

Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, Williams continued to expand its pipeline network and diversified its operations, acquiring companies in the chemical and plastics industries. In the 1970s, Williams expanded into oil and gas exploration and production and also entered the telecommunications industry.

In the 1990s, Williams spun off its telecommunications business to focus on energy infrastructure. The company acquired several natural gas processing plants and expanded its pipeline network, including the acquisition of Transco Energy Company in 1995.

In the early 2000s, Williams shifted its focus to midstream operations and formed Williams Partners LP, a master limited partnership (MLP) to own and operate its midstream assets. The company continued to expand its pipeline network with the construction of the Northwest Pipeline, which transports natural gas from the Rocky Mountains to the Pacific Northwest.

In 2011, Williams acquired a 50% stake in Access Midstream Partners, a major natural gas gathering and processing company in the Marcellus and Utica shale regions. In 2015, Williams sold its midstream assets to Williams Partners LP and spun off its exploration and production business to form a new company, WPX Energy.

Today, Williams Companies owns and operates midstream gathering and processing assets, as well as interstate natural gas pipelines, connecting North America's hydrocarbon resources to growing natural gas markets. The company's interstate gas pipeline and gathering and processing operations span the United States, including strategic assets in the deepwater Gulf of Mexico, the Rockies, the Pacific Northwest, and the Eastern Seaboard. Williams Companies is headquartered in Tulsa, Oklahoma, with major offices located in Houston, Pittsburgh, and Salt Lake City.
