The company was formerly known as Cree, Inc. and changed its name to Wolfspeed, Inc. in October 2021. Wolfspeed, Inc. was founded in 1987 and is headquartered in Durham, North Carolina.

Wolfspeed was founded in 2015 by Cree, Inc., a pioneer in the wide bandgap semiconductor industry. Wolfspeed was one of the first companies to manufacture and market full-custom and integrated circuits for power and RF applications using wide bandgap technology. Wolfspeed has grown to become the world leader in wide bandgap technology.
