History
Yonsei University was established on January 5, 1957, through the merger of two pioneering institutions: Yonhi College (also known as Chosun Christian College) and Severance Union Medical College. The history of Yonhi College can be traced back to 1915, when it was founded as an educational institution by American Christian missionaries. The college was originally called Chosun Christian College and was one of the first modern colleges in Korea.
Meanwhile, Severance Union Medical College had its roots in the first modern medical centre in Korea, Gwanghyewon, which was established in 1885. The medical centre was founded by American medical missionaries and played a significant role in the development of modern medicine in Korea. In 1886, Gwanghyewon became the first institution in Korea to offer a western-style medical education.
The two institutions, Yonhi College and Severance Union Medical College, began cooperating in the 1920s, and the idea of a merger was proposed in the 1930s. However, it was not until 1956 that the two institutions finally agreed to merge, creating Yonsei University. The name "Yonsei" was derived from the first syllables of the names of the two parent institutions, "Yon" from Yonhi College and "Sei" from Severance Union Medical College.
Yonsei University was established with a strong commitment to providing students with a world-class education and has since become one of the most prestigious universities in South Korea. Over the years, the university has continued to expand and develop, opening new campuses and introducing new academic programs. Today, Yonsei University is a leading institution of higher education in Asia, with a strong focus on research and innovation. It remains committed to its founding principles of excellence in teaching, research, and service to the community.
