History

Zhejiang University (ZJU) is one of China's oldest and most prestigious higher education institutions. Its roots can be traced back to the founding of the Qiushi Academy in 1897 by the governor of Zhejiang Province, Lin Qi. The academy was established with the aim of promoting education and training talented individuals who could serve the country.

Over the years, the academy underwent several changes, including renaming it the Hangzhou Advanced Normal College in 1903 and then Hangzhou National College in 1911. In 1927, it was further upgraded to become the National Zhejiang University, and in 1937, it moved to its current location in the Xixi Campus in Hangzhou.

After the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949, the university was reorganized and renamed Zhejiang University in 1952. The University underwent significant expansion during this time, with the establishment of new schools and departments and the recruitment of talented faculty members.

In the early 1980s, ZJU was selected as one of China's first institutions to participate in "Project 211," a government initiative aimed at developing a group of elite universities to support China's modernization drive. In 1998, ZJU was designated as a key institution under "Project 985," another government initiative aimed at developing world-class universities in China.

In recent years, ZJU has continued to expand and strengthen its research capabilities, establishing new institutes and research centres focused on priority areas such as smart cities, clean energy, precision medicine, and global public health initiatives related to the prevention and treatment of infectious diseases.

Today, ZJU is organized across seven faculties and 39 schools and has over 63,000 full-time students, of which over 53% are postgraduate students. The University is home to 4,383 full-time faculty members, including 30 members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and 31 members of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.

ZJU is recognized as one of the top universities in China and ranks among the top 100 in the Times Higher Education World Reputation Rankings and QS World University Rankings. Eighteen disciplines of ZJU have been selected for China's "Double First-class" Initiative, and 39 disciplines graded A in the recent national assessment, making ZJU a leading institution in China.
