Zumiez was founded in 1978 by Tom Campion and Gary Haake under the name Above the Belt. Initially, the stores sold clothing and accessories related to on-snow recreational activities, mainly snowboard gear. In 1986, the company was renamed Zumiez and began to publicly trade on the Nasdaq exchange in 2005.
