Grupa ?ywiec has a long history going back to the 18th century. The manufacturing of beer was already established in the town of Kraków since the mid-16th century. The brewing industry in Austria-Hungary began in the 19th century when the Austrians built a large factory in ?ywiec, Galicia. The plant had a major impact on beer production in the region and soon it became the biggest brewery in the country.
