Growing Up With AI: What Childhood Can Teach Us About Human Agency
Kids growing up with AI are learning when to use it, question it and step away; reshaping education, creativity, critical thinking and human agency.

The first generation growing up alongside generative AI may force society to answer a deeper question: which parts of thinking, creativity and relationships should remain fundamentally human?

Artificial intelligence is entering childhood before society has fully agreed on the rules.

Children now encounter AI through homework tools, search, games, social platforms, chatbots and creative software. In the United States, Pew Research Center found that 64% of teenagers aged 13 to 17 have used an AI chatbot. Information seeking and schoolwork are among the most common uses.

But the more interesting question is not how often children use AI.

It is what they may learn to hand over to it.

The New Skill Is Deciding What Stays Human

Previous generations learned when to use a calculator, when to search online and when to rely on memory.

Children growing up today face a much bigger version of that decision.

AI can write a paragraph, explain an equation, suggest an idea, imitate a style or hold a conversation.

The temptation is therefore not simply to use technology.

It is to delegate parts of thinking itself.

That makes one capability increasingly important: knowing what should remain your own work.

A student might use AI to understand a concept without asking it to complete the assignment.

A young writer might use it to check grammar while protecting their own voice.

A programmer might ask for debugging help while still understanding the code.

This is not resistance to technology. It is preserving agency while using technology.

Education Should Teach Friction, Not Eliminate It

Much of technological progress is designed to remove friction.

But learning depends on some forms of friction.

Getting an answer wrong, searching for the right words, struggling with a difficult argument and revising an idea all help build understanding.

If AI removes every uncomfortable stage of learning, education could become faster while students become less capable of working independently.

This suggests schools need a more sophisticated framework than simply banning or embracing generative AI.

The question should be:

Which difficulty is pointless, and which difficulty is developmental?

AI can reduce repetitive work.

It should not automatically remove the intellectual effort through which judgment is formed.

AI Could Also Make Learning More Equal

There is another side to the story.

Personal tutoring has always been unequally distributed.

A capable AI tutor could potentially explain the same subject repeatedly, adapt explanations to a student's level and provide practice whenever it is needed.

That creates a potentially significant opportunity for children who cannot access private tutors or additional academic support.

But the distinction between teaching and substitution remains crucial.

The best educational AI should help a student eventually solve a problem without it.

If the student becomes unable to work without the system, convenience has turned into dependency.

Children Need Permission to Distrust AI

AI literacy is often discussed as the ability to use AI effectively.

It should also include the ability to doubt it.

Generative systems can produce inaccurate answers with confident language. Children therefore need to learn that polished output is not the same as reliable knowledge.

Pew's research indicates that teenagers are already using chatbots extensively for information and school-related tasks.

That makes verification an educational skill rather than an optional precaution.

A useful classroom habit may eventually be:

Ask the AI. Then prove it.

The goal is not distrust for its own sake.

It is developing enough intellectual independence to challenge the machine.

The Hardest Boundary May Be Emotional

The stakes become higher when AI moves from assisting with tasks to becoming a companion.

UNICEF warned in a 2026 policy brief that AI chatbots and companion systems create distinct child-rights concerns, including risks involving privacy, manipulation, inappropriate content and emotional dependency.

This is fundamentally different from asking AI for help with algebra.

A child may understand that a calculator is a tool.

A conversational AI designed to appear caring, attentive or emotionally responsive creates a much less obvious boundary.

That is why child-centred AI governance increasingly focuses on design, not simply parental supervision.

UNICEF's guidance argues that AI systems used by children should protect safety, privacy, fairness and children's wider rights by design.

Adults Should Not Design This Future Alone

There is also a deeper issue of voice.

Children are usually discussed as people who need to be protected from technology.

They are much less often treated as people whose views should influence how that technology is designed.

That is beginning to change.

In July 2026, UNICEF and international partners launched a coalition focused on protecting children's rights in the age of artificial intelligence, explicitly arguing that children's interests should be embedded in AI policy and governance.

That principle matters.

The generation that will live longest with AI should have some role in deciding what an acceptable relationship with AI looks like.

Childhood May Become the Test of Human-Centred AI

The most important question surrounding children and AI may not ultimately be whether AI improves test scores.

It may be whether young people grow up understanding that capability and authority are different things.

A machine may be capable of writing for them.

That does not mean it should always speak for them.

It may be capable of recommending decisions.

That does not mean it should make every decision.

It may be capable of conversation.

That does not make it a replacement for human relationships.

The healthiest relationship with AI may therefore be built around one simple principle:

Use machines to expand human capability without allowing them to quietly replace human agency.

Children growing up with AI will probably become more comfortable with artificial intelligence than any generation before them.

The challenge is ensuring that comfort does not become surrender.

The future may belong not to those who use AI most often, but to those who understand which parts of themselves should never be automated.
