Containment areas only work effectively when they remain accessible, organised and ready to capture leaks or spills. In busy agricultural, chemical, mining, brewing and processing environments, storage zones can quickly become crowded with containers, hoses, pallets and handling equipment. By controlling what enters the area, maintaining clear access and checking containment equipment regularly, you can reduce operational risks while making routine inspections and spill response easier.

Keep Storage Equipment Within Defined Zones

Start by assigning clear positions for tanks, intermediate bulk containers and other liquid storage equipment. Defined storage zones make it easier to keep access routes open and prevent containers from gradually spreading into areas needed for inspection, handling or emergency response.

Empty pallets, packaging, discarded hoses and unused equipment can gradually accumulate around storage areas. Apart from creating trip hazards, these materials can obstruct drains, hide leaks and reduce the usable space within containment zones.

Set a routine for removing items that do not belong in the area. If a container has been emptied and is waiting for cleaning, servicing or collection, move it to a designated holding area where practical. Keeping only necessary equipment within containment zones makes abnormalities easier to identify during inspections.

Inspect Bunds and Containment Surfaces Regularly

A bund or spill containment area should remain structurally sound and free from damage that could allow liquid to escape. You should check surfaces for cracks, deterioration, corrosion or other defects, particularly where containers are frequently moved.

Also look for accumulated rainwater, residue or debris that could reduce available containment capacity. Where liquids need to be removed, follow your site's handling procedures so potentially contaminated material is not discharged incorrectly. Regular housekeeping makes these inspections faster because the containment area remains visible rather than being obscured by clutter.

Manage Hoses and Transfer Equipment Carefully

Transfer hoses, pumps and fittings should be stored so they do not create obstacles across access routes. Leaving hoses on the ground can also expose them to crushing, abrasion and accidental contamination.

A 2024 study examining EPDM hoses used in caustic liquid transfer lines found that prolonged exposure to demanding chemical conditions produced measurable material degradation and deterioration in burst performance. While the research focused on chemical ageing rather than storage practices, it reinforces the importance of treating transfer hoses as components whose condition can deteriorate over time. You should assign storage points for transfer equipment, return components after use and inspect hoses and fittings for visible damage or wear before reconnecting them.

Make Housekeeping Part of Routine Operations

Containment areas are easier to manage when housekeeping is built into normal work rather than treated as an occasional clean-up task. You should include storage condition, access clearance, visible leaks and containment capacity in routine site checks.

Responsibility also needs to be clear. When staff know who is expected to inspect and tidy each area, problems are less likely to remain unresolved between shifts or operating teams.

Keep Containment Ready for Its Intended Purpose

A functional containment area should remain clear enough to inspect, access and respond to problems without unnecessary delay. By controlling storage positions, removing clutter, maintaining bunds and organising transfer equipment, you protect the space needed for safe day-to-day operations. Consistent housekeeping also helps you identify developing issues earlier, keeping containment systems ready to perform when they are actually needed.
