Road to Medical Perfection: Syllabus of NEET PG and application of Intrauterine Devices (IUDs)

NEET PG (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test - Postgraduate) is an India level exam for private and government medical colleges MD/MS and PG Diploma admissions. It's a competitive exam of a student's overall knowledge of the MBBS syllabus, i.e., more than one subject and field over time. In order to clear this highly competitive examination, students must develop strong conceptual knowledge and clinical application skills.

The NEET PG curriculum is largely divided into three Pre-clinical, Para-clinical, and Clinical subjects with close similarity to the academic MBBS curriculum:

Pre-Clinical Subjects:

These are the foundations of medicine:

  • Anatomy: Structure of the human body, dissection, embryology, and histology.
  • Physiology: Function of organs and systems, e.g., nerve-muscle physiology, cardiovascular, renal, respiratory, and neurophysiology.

Biochemistry: Basic and clinical biochemistry, molecular biology, enzymes, metabolism, and vitamins.

Para-Clinical Subjects:

These connect clinical practice to basic science:

  • Pathology: Mechanisms of disease, inflammation, neoplasia, and organ pathology.
  • Microbiology: Bacteriology, virology, parasitology, mycology, and immunology.
  • Pharmacology: Mechanisms of drugs, drug classes, drug interactions, and therapeutic applications.

Clinical Subjects:

Test practical judgment and decision-making in real-life situations:

  • General Medicine, Pediatrics, Psychiatry, Dermatology
  • General Surgery, Orthopedics, Radiology, Anesthesia
  • Obstetrics and Gynecology, ENT, and Ophthalmology

NEET PG is 200 questions that are most of the time clinical case studies, image questions, and concepts that are mixed. As there is a negative marking for incorrect responses, speed must be balanced with accuracy. An effective preparation strategy should involve:

  • Revision of high-yield subject material in time
  • Mock tests with revision
  • Integrated learning in order to provide theory and clinical application integration
  • Topics such as cardiovascular disorders, neoplasms, antibiotic pharmacology, pregnancy disorders, and infectious diseases are mostly focused on in recent exams.

Intrauterine Device (IUD): A Committed Family Planning Tool

Under the domain of gynecology and reproductive health a key part of the NEET PG Exam syllabus is the Intrauterine Device, or IUD, one of the most widely used and safest forms of contraception. It's a flexible T-shaped contraceptive that is placed inside the uterus to delay pregnancy and is highly preferred for its reversibility and long-term use.

Types of IUD:

  • Copper IUD (Non-Hormonal):

These IUDs release copper ions that create a toxic condition for sperm and hence fertilization becomes difficult. They have a duration of 5 to 10 years. Examples are Cu-T and Multiload.

  • Hormonal IUD

These release a constant dose of levonorgestrel, a progestin. They are effective for 3 to 5 years. Examples include Mirena, Skyla, and Liletta.

Mechanism of Action:

IUDs mainly work by:

  • Disrupting sperm passage and fertilizing the egg
  • Changing the endometrium such that the fertilized egg can no longer implant (particularly hormonal IUDs)
  • Disrupting sperm motility and function within the uterus

Advantages of IUDs:

  • Extremely effective (over 99% successful)
  • Low maintenance once it is inserted
  • Long-term protection without daily pill administration
  • Quick resumption of fertility upon removal
  • Hormonal IUDs also decrease menstrual cramps and bleeding

Side effects and complications:

  • Irregular spotting or bleeding initially
  • Minimal pain during and after insertion
  • Rarely: expulsion, infection, or perforation of the uterus

Best Candidates:

  • IUDs are suitable for women:
  • Wanting long-term birth control
  • Require a low-maintenance, reversible method
  • Completed childbearing or want spacing of children

Not ideal for women with:

  • Active pelvic infection
  • Certain uterine abnormalities
  • Unexplained vaginal bleeding

Insertion Procedure:

The implant is inserted by a trained health worker, typically when the woman is having her period so that she is certain to not be pregnant. It takes just a few minutes and is done in a clinic.

Whether cracking the NEET PG or studying about an ever-important family planning tool like the Intrauterine Device (IUD), medical brilliance is all about finding equilibrium between practice and theory. NEET PG syllabus makes sure that budding doctors are well-equipped with the knowledge that specialisation requires, while knowledge on instruments like IUDs once again strongly underlines the importance of patient care treatment coupled with prevention.
