Three Business Lessons From Fee-Free Service Providers
23 Dec 2024, 10:52 am GMT
A golden rule in business is that you should value your time. That’s true to an extent, but that doesn’t mean you always have to charge a fee for your services. There are plenty of companies out there making money despite offering a free service. How? Well, there are a variety of ways you can make money from fee-free services.
Adverts Can Cover Your Costs
One way to make money without charging consumers is advertising. The internet is awash with companies that do this. YouTube is a great example of a massive company that doesn’t charge consumers.
We’ll ignore the fact that it offers a premium subscription service because it’s not compulsory. Nobody has to pay to watch videos on YouTube if they don’t want to. YouTube charges advertisers to promote products at the start, during, and end of videos. Some of this money is distributed back to content creators, and the rest goes into YouTube’s coffers.
Utilize Contacts and Cash
Another way to remove the financial burden from customers is to streamline the sales process and work with cash. Car companies, such as We Buy Any Car, are a great example of how cash transactions can speed up the sales process and give customers a better overall experience.
A similar model has been adopted by property companies such as Sold in recent years. These companies don't charge fees like traditional estate agents, which means you can sell your house for free. They're able to do this for two reasons. Firstly, they have networks of pre-approved buyers willing to pay for early access to properties. Secondly, if a buyer isn’t secured quickly, the company can purchase a property for cash.
This speeds up the process and gives the company an asset it can re-sell at a later date when the market is hot, thus making a profit and covering any costs incurred. In this scenario, the seller is happy because they got 100% of what they asked for without paying out fees. The buyer (either an individual or the company) is happy because they have a property they can potentially make a profit on in the future.
Become an Affiliate
The final way to generate revenue from a fee-free service is affiliate deals. Take an online price comparison site such as Best Deals USA. The process is simple: you search for a product, and Best Deals USA shows you a list of deals and associated links. If you use those links to complete a purchase, Best Deals USA gets commission payments.
Sometimes, the commission is a flat fee; other times, it might be a percentage of the amount you spend (revenue share). Whichever way Best Deals USA is compensated, it makes money when you complete a purchase using its affiliate links. You don’t even realize this because there's no charge.
It’s the same for all of the fee-free models we’ve outlined and it’s why they’re successful. Consumers want the best service possible for the cheapest price. They also don’t want to be exploited. These fee-free models satisfy all of those demands. Consumers are getting what they want, they’re not paying for it, and no one is being exploited. That’s a win for everyone, and the reason it’s possible to make money without charging fees.
