Ahti Heinla

Summary
Ahti Heinla is an Estonian computer programmer, technology entrepreneur, and one of the original developers of Skype. He is currently the Co-founder, Chief Executive Officer, and Chief Technology Officer of Starship Technologies, a company he founded in 2014 with Janus Friis to develop autonomous delivery robots.
Heinla began programming at the age of ten, learning from his parents, who were both computer programmers. By the age of seventeen, he was already working as a professional developer. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, he worked with Jaan Tallinn and Priit Kasesalu on the computer game Kosmonaut, which achieved commercial success in Scandinavia. This led to the founding of Bluemoon Interactive, one of Estonia’s first game development companies, where Heinla worked from 1989 to 2000.
From 2001 to 2003, he served as Chief Technical Architect at Joltid, the company that developed the core peer-to-peer technology later used by Skype. From 2002 to 2008, Heinla was Chief Technical Architect at Skype, where he played a central role in designing the system that transformed global internet communication. He also founded targetapi.com (2007–2010) and has owned Ambient Sound Investments since 2005.
In 2014, Heinla co-founded Starship Technologies, where he has served in multiple leadership roles including CEO and CTO. Under his technical leadership, Starship created the first large-scale commercial autonomous delivery robot system. Starship robots now operate across Europe and North America, performing millions of deliveries and completing over 100,000 road crossings per day with zero-emission electric vehicles.
Heinla has also been deeply involved in civic and environmental work. In 2008, he helped organise Let’s Do It!, a national clean-up campaign that mobilised 50,000 volunteers in Estonia and later expanded globally, involving more than 8.5 million volunteers in over 100 countries. He has served on the board of the Estonian Fund for Nature since 2006.
His recognised achievements include the Order of the White Star (5th Class) in 2007 and the Estonian Volunteer of the Year Award in 2008. He has participated as team leader in the NASA Centennial Challenge (2013–2014). Heinla holds multiple technology patents related to distributed optimisation and data routing. He studied physics at the University of Tartu and speaks Estonian, English, and Spanish.
Biography
Ahti Heinla was born on 2 May 1972 in Estonia. He grew up in a household where both of his parents were computer programmers, and this gave him early exposure to computing. He learned to write computer programs at the age of ten. By the time he was seventeen, he was already working as a professional developer. His early interest in computing was not limited to personal projects. During his teenage years, he began collaborating with Jaan Tallinn and Priit Kasesalu, and together they created a computer game called Kosmonaut. The game achieved commercial success in Scandinavia and marked one of the earliest internationally visible technology products from Estonia. This success led to the founding of Bluemoon Interactive in 1989, which became one of Estonia’s first software and game development companies. Heinla worked at Bluemoon Interactive until 2000 and played a central role in shaping the technical culture of Estonia’s early software industry.
In 1999, Heinla briefly worked as a programmer at Everyday.com. In 2001, he became Chief Technical Architect at Joltid, the company responsible for developing the peer-to-peer communication technology that later formed the technical foundation of Skype. From 2002 to 2008, Heinla served as Chief Technical Architect at Skype, where he was one of the main engineers behind the platform’s architecture. Skype changed how people communicated across the world by enabling low-cost voice and video communication over the internet. Heinla’s work at Skype placed him among the most influential technical figures in the development of modern internet communication systems.
Alongside his work in commercial technology, Heinla has been active in civic and environmental initiatives. Since 2006, he has been a board member of the Estonian Fund for Nature. In 2008, he was one of the organisers of the national clean-up campaign “Let’s Do It!”, which mobilised 50,000 volunteers in a single day to remove illegal waste from across Estonia. The campaign later expanded into a global movement, with similar clean-up actions taking place in over 100 countries and involving more than 8.5 million volunteers. This project marked a turning point in Heinla’s engagement with large-scale civic participation and digital coordination.
After leaving Skype, Heinla continued to build new technology companies. He founded targetapi.com in 2007 and served as its founder until 2010. He has also been the owner of Ambient Sound Investments since 2005, which he uses to support technology ventures and innovation projects. In 2013 and 2014, he participated as team leader for Team Kuukulgur in the NASA Centennial Challenge, focusing on autonomous robotics research.
In 2014, Heinla co-founded Starship Technologies together with Janus Friis. The company was created to develop autonomous delivery robots for last-mile logistics. Heinla has held several leadership roles at Starship, including Co-founder, Chief Technology Officer, and Chief Executive Officer. Under his technical leadership, Starship developed one of the world’s first large-scale commercial autonomous delivery systems. The company’s robots now operate in cities and university campuses across Europe and North America. They have completed millions of commercial deliveries and perform more than 100,000 road crossings per day using electric, zero-emission vehicles. Starship’s work has helped establish autonomous delivery as a new sector within global logistics.
Heinla is also the holder of multiple technology patents, including “Distributed Optimiser with Hop Horizon”, “Utility Based Route Selection”, and “Utility Based Stream Selection”, which were filed between 2010 and 2012 and relate to distributed network optimisation and data routing.
Heinla was educated at the Gustav Adolf Gymnasium and later studied physics at the University of Tartu. He speaks Estonian, English, and Spanish. His contributions to technology and society have been formally recognised. In 2007, he was awarded the Order of the White Star, 5th Class, by the Estonian state. In 2008, he received the Estonian Volunteer of the Year national award for his role in the Let’s Do It movement.
Vision
Ahti Heinla’s vision is to use technology to solve real problems in society by building systems that are practical, reliable, and widely accessible. He believes innovation should improve everyday life, not just create new products. His work focuses on long-term impact rather than short-term trends. Through Starship Technologies, he aims to transform urban logistics with autonomous delivery that is safe, efficient, and environmentally responsible. Through civic projects such as Let’s Do It and Citizen OS, he supports stronger public participation and shared responsibility. Heinla’s vision connects technical progress with social improvement, where technology supports communities, governance, and sustainable development.
Recognition and Awards
Ahti Heinla has received formal recognition for both his technological and civic contributions. In 2007, he was awarded the Order of the White Star, 5th Class, one of Estonia’s national honours, for his work in technology development and public service. In 2008, he received the Estonian Volunteer of the Year national award for his role in organising the Let’s Do It environmental movement, which mobilised tens of thousands of volunteers across Estonia and later expanded worldwide. His technical achievements are also reflected in multiple registered patents related to distributed systems and data routing. Heinla’s work at Skype and Starship Technologies is widely acknowledged within the global technology and robotics industries.
