History

Alibaba Cloud, established in September 2009 as a subsidiary of Alibaba Group, began with a focus on offering cloud computing services to online businesses, including Alibaba's own ecosystem. Initially based in Hangzhou, Beijing, and Silicon Valley, Alibaba Cloud quickly expanded its research and development capabilities to build a strong cloud infrastructure.

In November 2010, the company played a crucial role in managing Alibaba’s 11.11 Global Shopping Festival, handling 2.4 billion page views in 24 hours. In 2012, it became the first Chinese cloud service provider to attain the ISO27001:2005 certification, meeting international security standards. In January 2013, Alibaba Cloud merged with HiChina, acquiring one of China’s largest domain registration and hosting businesses, expanding its reach further.

By 2014, the company launched its first international data centre in Hong Kong, followed by its defence against a 14-hour Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack that peaked at 453.8 Gbit/s. In 2015, Alibaba Cloud received a $1 billion investment from Alibaba Group, helping it expand its operations with new data centres in Singapore and the United States. This marked the beginning of its international growth, with Singapore designated as its global headquarters. During the same year, Alibaba Cloud’s MaxCompute platform set a new record in the Sort Benchmark by processing 100 TB of data in 377 seconds.

Between 2016 and 2017, the company formed key partnerships with firms such as SK Holdings in Korea and SoftBank in Japan, helping to drive cloud adoption in Asia. In 2017, Alibaba Cloud became the official cloud services provider for the Olympic Games, demonstrating its capability on a global scale. In 2021, the company faced challenges when the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology suspended its partnership due to reporting failures around the Log4Shell vulnerability. Despite this, Alibaba Cloud continued to expand its global footprint, launching a data centre in the Philippines and pledging $1 billion in 2022 to upgrade its global partner ecosystem.

In 2023, Alibaba Cloud continued to expand its global presence and maintain its leadership in the cloud computing market. According to Gartner, Alibaba Cloud held the largest market share in the Asia-Pacific region for Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), a position it has held since 2018. Globally, Alibaba Cloud ranked as the third-largest cloud service provider, behind Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft Azure. In March 2023, Alibaba Cloud partnered with Dubai Holding to upgrade its data centre operations in the Middle East to better serve customers in that region. TÜV Rheinland also certified the company’s carbon emissions for its customers, reflecting its efforts to reduce environmental impact.
