Summary

Atmos Energy Marketing is a full-service natural gas marketing company providing supply and asset management services to utilities, industrial facilities, power plants and gas producers. They have the resources and management systems necessary to deliver unparalleled reliability, flexibility and cost efficiency to all types of natural gas users, large and small.

History

1906: Atmos Energy’s history dates back to 1906 in the Panhandle of Texas.

1920: Amarillo Gas made a pipeline connection to the field.

1924: Southwestern Development Company acquired both Amarillo Oil and Amarillo Gas.

1929: United Cities was founded as a butane air manufacturer and distributor, operating plants in 17 cities.

1953: Southwestern's various gas distribution businesses are consolidated as Pioneer Natural Gas Company.

1954–80: Consolidation and Continued Expansion

1969: Included in these was Trans State Tire Company, which Pioneer bought in and sold off a year and a half later.

1971: Notably, after the energy crunch that started, Pioneer began bolstering its exploration operations, and over the next ten years, riding the oil boom, turned itself into a billion-dollar corporation.

1981: The company was incorporated and became a fully regulated natural-gas-only distributor.

1983: Energas, the natural gas distribution division of Pioneer, was spun off and became an independent, publicly held natural gas distribution company.

1988: In October, Energas changed its corporate name to Atmos Energy Corporation and its stock began trading on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol "ATO". Today, Atmos Energy employs approximately 4,800 people.

1993: Purchased the Greeley Gas Company, then privately owned by the Schlessman family.

1997: In July, Atmos reached a major milestone when it acquired its millionth customer.

2000: The company's focus this year was on growth.
