History
Avianca was founded in 1919, describing itself as the first airline in the Americas. In 1929, the government of Colombia started acquiring a number of the company’s planes and sending them to a new military aviation school, this marked the start of Avianca's long standing relationship with the Colombian military. TACA was formed in 1931 by five Central American countries as a flag airline of the region. In 2009, Avianca and TACA announced plans to merge to become Latin America’s second largest airline group.
