Summary
Avianca Holdings S.A. is a holding company with investments in airlines in Latin America. The company is headquartered in Bogotá, Colombia and was formed following the merger of the majority of the continuing business of Aerovías del Continente Americano S.A. (Avianca) and Grupo TACA S.A. The group is a International Airlines Group (IAG) member.
History

Avianca was founded in 1919, describing itself as the first airline in the Americas. In 1929, the government of Colombia started acquiring a number of the company’s planes and sending them to a new military aviation school, this marked the start of Avianca's long standing relationship with the Colombian military. TACA was formed in 1931 by five Central American countries as a flag airline of the region. In 2009, Avianca and TACA announced plans to merge to become Latin America’s second largest airline group.
