History

Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University (BBAU) is a prominent Central University located in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, India. It was established on 10th January 1996 and is named after Dr. B. R. Ambedkar, a distinguished social reformer and the principal architect of the Indian Constitution. The university was founded through an Act passed by the Indian Parliament, under the Ministry of Human Resource Development. Its establishment aimed to promote education and research while upholding the values of social justice and equality championed by Dr. Ambedkar.

 

The main campus of BBAU is situated on Raebareli Road in Lucknow, covering 250 acres. It is designed to offer an eco-friendly environment conducive to learning. The university also operates a satellite campus in Amethi, Uttar Pradesh, established in 2016, which primarily offers undergraduate courses.

 

The academic structure of the university comprises several schools, each specialising in different disciplines. These include the School of Engineering and Technology, the School of Information Science and Technology, the School of Life Sciences, the School of Legal Studies, and the School of Management Studies, among others. The university was also featured in EduRank 2025, where it was placed 231st in India and 4936th globally, with notable research contributions in fields such as Biochemical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, and Forensic Science. Furthermore, BBAU was ranked 2720th globally in the Webometrics 2024 rankings, highlighting its growing international presence.
