Summary
In 1891 a small agency named Batten Company opened in a single room on Park Row in New York City. In subsequent years it thrived- and in 1928- merged with Barton- Durstine- Osborn. BBDO was born. Today BBDO Worldwide is a full-service global advertising agency network focused on: The Work. The Work. The Work. History
The history of BBDO- one of the world's most prominent advertising agencies- traces its roots back to the late nineteenth century. In 1891 George Batten established his one-room advertising agency in New York pioneering in-house printing and emphasizing simple standout typography. By 1906 the agency had expanded to fifty employees and moved to the Metropolitan Annex building on East 24th Street.
In 1919 Bruce Barton and Roy Sarles Durstine founded the Barton and Durstine Company which later became Barton- Durstine and Osborn when Alex Osborn joined the same year. Subsequently in 1928 the agency merged with the George Batten Company managed by William H. Johns.. forming Batten Barton Durstine and Osborn- abbreviated as BBDO.
Throughout its history BBDO exhibited a commitment to innovation. In 1925 the agency aired its first radio program and established the first radio department in the advertising industry. In the late Twenties John Caples- a famous copywriter whose considerable talents in mail-order advertising earned him a place in advertising history- joined the agency.He was later inducted into the Advertising Hall Of Fame. In 1940 Alex Osborn introduced the technique of "brainstorming" to generate ideas, showcasing the agency's dedication to creativity. Over the years BBDO secured notable clients and achieved industry recognition. In 1960 it won the Pepsi account, which endured for nearly five decades.
Jim Jordan- a renowned creative figure- left a significant mark with campaigns like "Schaefer is the one beer to have when you're having more than one" which won a Clio and "Ring around the collar" for Wisk Detergent. BBDO's growth continued in the Eighties and Nineties- marked by iconic campaigns such as the Pepsi commercial starring Cindy Crawford. Allen Rosenshine assumed leadership roles and BBDO was named Agency of the Year multiple times by prominent industry publications.
The agency's creative prowess culminated in a record five consecutive years of winning "Network of the Year" award at the Cannes Lions Advertising Festival. BBDO Worldwide's legacy extends to the twenty first century with accolades such as Campaign Agency of the Year 2017 and the Cannes Lions Network of the Year 2018. As recognized by the Cannes Lions International Creativity Report, Impact BBDO leads the Middle East and Africa region yet again as the No.1 ranked creative agency in 2022 for the fourth consecutive year.
