Established in February 1982 under the Bharathiar University Act, 1981 (Act 1 of 1982), the university was named after Subramania Bharathi, a highly regarded Tamil poet and national figure. Initially, Bharathiar University operated from the premises of the Postgraduate Centre of the University of Madras, which had been functioning in Coimbatore before 1982.
