History

The Blackstone Group was founded in 1985 by Peter G. Peterson and Stephen A. Schwarzman. Initially a mergers and acquisitions advisory boutique, the firm has since grown to become one of the largest alternative investment firms in the world. Throughout its history, Blackstone has expanded its offerings to include private equity, credit, hedge fund, real estate, infrastructure, and strategic capital investments, among other sectors. From the 1980s to the 2000s, Blackstone evolved into a powerhouse of global private equity, building up its portfolio of firms. In 2006, Blackstone went public, launching the first public offering from a private equity firm. Over the next decade, Blackstone further solidified its status as a leader, becoming the largest private equity firm in the world. In 2019, the firm revised its strategy to focus more on core investment platforms like private equity and real estate, while scaling back exposure to non-core sectors like hedge funds. Today, Blackstone is one of the largest investment firms in the world, managing more than $550 billion in assets and deploying capital across multiple strategies in over 40 countries around the world.
