History
Cigna is an American healthcare company that offers health insurance, Medicare and Medicaid products, dental, vision, and supplemental health insurance, and health savings accounts. It was founded in 1792 as the Insurance Company of North America (INA), the first marine insurance company in the United States.
In 1982, INA merged with Connecticut General Life Insurance Company (CG) to form Cigna, which stands for "Connecticut General Corporation Insurance Group and Affiliates." The company is headquartered in Bloomfield, Connecticut.
Throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, Cigna expanded its operations by acquiring other companies, including Healthsource and Great-West Healthcare. In 2004, Cigna sold its property and casualty insurance business to ACE Limited, and in 2007, it sold its retirement services business to Prudential Financial.
In 2011, Cigna acquired HealthSpring, a provider of Medicare Advantage plans, for $3.8 billion. The acquisition allowed Cigna to expand its Medicare and Medicaid offerings. In 2015, Cigna attempted to merge with Anthem, another large health insurance company, but the proposed merger was blocked by the United States Department of Justice over concerns about reduced competition in the health insurance market.
In 2018, Cigna announced its acquisition of Express Scripts, a pharmacy benefit management company, for $52 billion. The acquisition allowed Cigna to offer more integrated healthcare services and better control costs. In 2020, Cigna announced the sale of its group life and disability insurance business to New York Life for $6.3 billion.
Today, Cigna is one of the largest health insurance companies in the United States, with over 170 million customer and patient relationships worldwide. The company has more than 70,000 employees and operates in 30 countries and jurisdictions. Cigna is consistently ranked among the best health insurance companies for customer satisfaction and quality of care.
