History
Coventry Business School traces its roots to the formation of the Faculty of Business at Lanchester Polytechnic in 1987. The School was formally established in 1990, shortly before the institution was renamed Coventry University in 1992. This evolution marked the transition from a polytechnic to a university, following national changes in the higher education sector in the United Kingdom.
The School is located in the William Morris Building, which has a significant industrial heritage. Originally constructed in 1916, the building was acquired in 1923 by William Morris, a notable figure in the British automotive industry, for engine production. Coventry University took ownership of the building in 1992 and undertook extensive renovation works to convert it into a modern academic facility. Today, it houses advanced IT labs, lecture theatres, dedicated postgraduate teaching spaces, and Europe’s largest academic trading floor.
Since its establishment, Coventry Business School has grown and restructured into several specialised departments. These include the School of Economics, Finance and Accounting; the School of Strategy and Leadership; and the School of Marketing and Management. The School has also developed a range of undergraduate, postgraduate, and research programmes.
In 2015, the School introduced the National MBA in Cyber Security, now known as the MBA for the Cyber Security Management sector. The programme was launched at the House of Commons and gained the support of both the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition. It was conceptualised by Professor Richard Benham, a visiting professor at Coventry University.
The School is an accredited study centre for the Chartered Institute of Marketing and is affiliated with various academic organisations including the Association of Business Schools, the European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD), and the Chartered Association of Business Schools (CABS). It also holds membership in global networks such as AACSB and CEEMAN.
International collaboration is an important aspect of the School’s history. Coventry Business School has built partnerships with academic institutions across Europe and Asia, including universities in Finland, China, France, and Poland. These partnerships support joint programmes, exchanges, and research initiatives.
Coventry Business School is home to the Centre for Business in Society (CIBS), which focuses on applied research in sustainability, ethical consumption, and economic development. In 2010, CIBS launched the journal Sport, Business and Management: an International Journal in partnership with Emerald Publishing. The centre has also hosted international conferences, such as the Play the Game International Conference in 2009.
