History
CSX Corporation is an American holding company based in Jacksonville, Florida. It was founded in 1978 when the Chessie System merged with the Seaboard Coast Line to form CSX. The company provides rail-based transportation services, including traditional rail service and transport of intermodal containers and trailers. In addition, CSX also owns and operates a business unit dedicated to commercial real estate development and leasing. Throughout its history, CSX has acquired and merged with other companies, typically railroads and real estate portfolios. In 1980, Seaboard Coast Line Industries, Inc. and Family Lines System were acquired. In 1986 and 1987, Chessie System and Seaboard Coast Line acquired Louisville and Nashville Railroad and the Monon Railroad, respectively. In 1991 CSX acquired Conrail, a freight railroad operating in the Northeastern United States. In 1997, CSX and Conrail split into two operating companies, CSX Corporation and Conrail Corporation. In 2001, CSX acquired the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad and its subsidiaries. In addition, CSX Corporation has also sold off assets, including its intermodal, truck trailer and container leasing business. In 2005, CSX sold off its real estate portfolio to a private equity firm and in 2006, CSX sold its intermodal business to a subsidiary of Maersk. In 2010, CSX sold its automotive interchange business to another transportation services provider. Today, CSX Corporation is still a leading provider of rail-based transportation services and is dedicated to creating value for its customers and stakeholders.
