D.R. Horton, Inc. is a home-building company in the United States. The Company constructs and sells homes through its operating divisions in 27 states and 78 metropolitan markets of the United States, primarily under the name of D.R. Horton, America’s Builder. Through its financial services operations, the Company provides mortgage financing and title agency services to home-buyers in many of its home-building markets.

DHI Mortgage, its 100% owned subsidiary, provides mortgage financing services primarily to the Company’s home-building customers and generally sells the mortgages it originates and the related servicing rights to third-party purchasers. In May 2014, the Company acquired home building operations of Crown Communities.

History

Horton set out on his own in November after convincing a bank to lend him the money to build his first house. D.R. Horton broke ground on our first home in Fort Worth, Texas. D.R. Horton has consistently delivered top-quality new homes to homebuyers across the nation. The company was founded by Donald R. Horton.

Encouraged by the company's consistency and by changes in the housing industry, Horton made an important decision, one that marked a turning point in the company's development. D.R. Horton begins to expand beyond the Dallas-Fort Worth market.

He took his company public in June, raising $40 million in D.R. Horton's initial public offering of stock.

When sales reached $190 million, the company ranked as the 24th largest builder in the country.

For Horton, the inflexibility of the system defeated his own strategy, which was to sell houses, not build them. "There's nothing a buyer hates worse than to hear 'No,'" he said in a February 28, interview with Forbes. D.R. Horton's acquisition campaign began in earnest when the company operated in 25 cities located in 11 states.

The company acquired Continental Homes for $305 million and the assumption of $278 million in debt.

In Arlington, Texas, however, certain aspects of the company's overall operation fell under the control of a central command, particularly after a national accounts division was created. The company promoted Donald J. Tomnitz to vice chairman and chief executive and promoted Richard Beckwitt to president.

The company acquired Century Title Agency.

According to Forbes, it is considered one of the top 2000 largest public companies in the world.

Net income for the year eclipsed $400 million, a 57 percent increase over the profits recorded in 2001. The company acquired Emerald Builders and Fortress Homes and Communities of Florida.

The company generated $6.7 billion in revenues, a total collected from closing the sale of 29,761 homes.

Although the company announced it did not intend to complete any acquisitions, its dedication to growth remained unchecked.

In April, the company acquired Pacific Ridge Homes, based in Seattle, for $72 million. In May, the company received approval from the Honolulu City Council to begin construction on an 11,750-home planned community in West Oahu, Hawaii.

The company acquired Wilson Parker Homes for $90 million.

The company moved its headquarters from Fort Worth, Texas to Arlington, Texas.

The company acquired Terramor Homes, Classic Builders, and Westport Homes.
