History

Deutsche Telekom is a German telecommunications company headquartered in Bonn, Germany. The company is one of the largest telecommunications providers in Europe and the world, with operations in over 50 countries.

Deutsche Telekom was originally founded in 1995 as a state-owned company called Deutsche Bundespost Telekom. It was created as a result of the German government's decision to privatize its telecommunications sector. The company was later renamed to Deutsche Telekom in 1996, after it was privatized and listed on the Frankfurt and New York stock exchanges.

Throughout the late 1990s and early 2000s, Deutsche Telekom expanded its operations through a series of acquisitions and partnerships. In 1999, the company acquired the US-based mobile operator VoiceStream Wireless, which was later renamed T-Mobile US. In 2001, Deutsche Telekom acquired the UK-based mobile operator One2One, which was later rebranded as T-Mobile UK.

In 2008, Deutsche Telekom acquired the Greek telecommunications company OTE, which gave the company a significant presence in the Balkans. In 2010, Deutsche Telekom formed a strategic partnership with France Telecom, which created the joint venture company, Everything Everywhere, in the UK.

Deutsche Telekom's mobile telecommunications division, T-Mobile, has been a significant driver of the company's growth. In recent years, T-Mobile has aggressively expanded its network and customer base in the United States. In 2020, T-Mobile completed its merger with Sprint, making it the third-largest mobile operator in the United States.
