History
The Business School at Edge Hill University has its origins in the early history of the university itself. Edge Hill University was founded in 1885 as Edge Hill College, with the initial aim of providing teacher training. The college was established by a group of philanthropists in Liverpool and was the first non-denominational teacher training college for women in England.
Over time, the institution grew and expanded its academic offerings beyond teacher training. By the 1930s, Edge Hill College moved to a new campus in Ormskirk, Lancashire, to accommodate its increasing student population. During World War II, the campus was requisitioned for military use, and the college temporarily relocated to Bingley in Yorkshire.
The college began admitting male students in 1959, and the expansion of courses continued. In 2005, Edge Hill College gained the ability to award its own degrees through Taught Degree Awarding Powers, granted by the Privy Council. This significant development marked a new phase in the institution’s evolution, and on May 18, 2006, Edge Hill College officially became Edge Hill University.
