History

The chain was founded by Juan Francisco Ochoa in 1975 in Guasave, Sinaloa, Mexico. The chain initially began as a walk-up stand offering chicken and primarily serving local Mexican communities in California, Arizona, Nevada and Texas. The chain has 334 restaurants in those four states and added a restaurant in Bakersfield, California, in October 2019. El Pollo Loco primarily competes with KFC.
