Joswiak received his Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering from the University of Michigan in 1986. During his time at college, his last name, which combines the last names of Apple co-founders Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak, led to his nickname "Joz," which has stuck with him throughout his career.

Joswiak's journey at Apple began in June 1986 when he joined Apple Computer, having been directly recruited from college. Over the years, he climbed the ranks within the company and by 1997, he became the head of marketing for the PowerBook line. As Apple expanded into mobile hardware, such as the iPod, in 2001, Joswiak took on additional responsibilities in this area.
