History

Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU), established on November 24, 1969, in Amritsar, Punjab, commemorates the 500th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the revered founder of Sikhism. Founded under the Guru Nanak Dev University Act of 1969, the institution embodies principles of education, research, and Sikh values.

The university operates both as a residential campus and an affiliating institution, extending its educational reach across a spectrum of disciplines including humanities, sciences, technology, and applied sciences. Central to its mission is the promotion of Guru Nanak Dev Ji's teachings of universal brotherhood, truthfulness, compassion, and harmony.

Spread across 500 acres west of Amritsar city, the university campus is characterised by lush greenery, modern architecture, and a sustainable environment. It hosts 45 teaching departments on-site and oversees 170 affiliated colleges and constituent institutions, many situated in rural areas to ensure accessibility to quality education.

GNDU has garnered significant recognition for its academic and research endeavors. It was designated a "University with Potential for Excellence" by the University Grants Commission (UGC) in 2012 and received the highest accreditation grade (A++) from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) in 2022.
