Homi Bhabha National Institute (HBNI), established in 2005, is a premier Indian deemed university set up by the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE). Named after the eminent Indian physicist Homi J. Bhabha, the institute aims to advance nuclear science and engineering education and research. HBNI brings together the academic programmes of ten DAE constituent institutions, including the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) in Mumbai and the Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR) in Kalpakkam.

Accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with an A+ grade and a CGPA of 3.40, HBNI has earned a reputation for academic excellence. HBNI's founder-director, Ravi Grover, played a pivotal role in its formation, which was officially announced by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in 2005.

The Homi Bhabha National Institute was eventually established as a result.

On 4th June 2005, the then Prime Minister of India, Manmohan Singh, officially announced the establishment of HBNI. The institute was named in honour of Dr. Homi Jehangir Bhabha, a renowned Indian physicist who is often referred to as the father of the Indian nuclear programme. Dr. Bhabha’s vision and pioneering work laid the foundation for India’s atomic energy endeavours.

One of the main contributors to the establishment of HBNI was its founding director, Ravi Grover. His work made sure the institute would bring the academic activities of the several DAE universities together and raise their standards to an international level. HBNI was granted the status of a deemed university by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), marking a significant milestone in India’s educational landscape.

The constituent institutions under HBNI include prominent research centres such as the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) in Mumbai, the Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR) in Kalpakkam, the Raja Ramanna Centre for Advanced Technology (RRCAT) in Indore, and several others across India. 2019: HBNI was ranked 10th in the world in the "Nine universities under 50 in the fast lane" category. This prestigious ranking underscores the institute's rapid progress and significant contributions to scientific research.

2020: In the Nature Index 2020 Annual Tables, which track high-quality research in the natural sciences, HBNI was ranked second among all academic institutions in India, just behind the Indian Institute of Science (IISc). This ranking was based on the institution's share and count of articles published in prestigious scientific journals from 1 March 2019 to 29 February 2020.

National Rankings and Accreditation

2023: The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) ranked HBNI 30th overall and 17th among universities in India. These rankings reflect the institute's dedication to academic excellence, research output, and its significant contribution to the field of nuclear science and engineering.

Homi Bhabha National Institute (HBNI) successfully placed 219 out of 339 UG and PG students during the 2022 placements. The median package offered was INR 11.40 LPA for PG (1-year) and INR 11.72 LPA for PG (2-year) students. Notably, there was a 19% increase in the median package for PG (3-year) students compared to 2021. However, the placement rate for PG (2-year) students saw a 10% decrease during the same period. These statistics highlight HBNI's strong job integration and evolving placement trends.
