History
Humana was founded in 1961 by David A. Jones Sr., Wendell Cherry and Reynolds C. Drake in Louisville, Kentucky. An initial public offering of the corporation was made in July of 1971, which enabled the company to expand to new markets. During the 1970s, Humana opened additional health care facilities, focusing primarily on hospital and nursing home management. In June of 1984, Humana became the largest publicly owned hospital operator in the United States after it acquired American Medical Holdings for $800 million, making it the largest non-profit provider of health care benefits in America. By 1993, Humana had become the largest managed health care provider in the United States. Humana went on to expand beyond its traditional focus of hospital management to include offering health plans and pharmacy benefit management services. In 1996, Humana acquired the pharmacy benefit management company, PCS Health Plans. A few years later, Humana combined its hospital, health plan and pharmacy business under the same corporate umbrella to create a diversified health care company. In 2008, Humana acquired Concentra, a leading provider of occupational health services in the United States, further diversifying its business. Humana continued to expand its services by entering into the Medicare Advantage and Part D markets in 2010. In 2011, Humana announced plans to acquire home health care provider Arcadian Management Services and hospice provider Comprehensive Home Care. In 2016, Humana announced the acquisition of hospice provider Kindred Healthcare. In 2017, Humana announced plans to acquire properties from Lehigh Gas Partners, LLC, further expanding its position in the retail business. Humana also established two joint ventures that same year, both aimed at providing care for seniors in the home – partnerships between CURE and Home Instead Senior Care respectively. In 2020, Humana acquired the healthcare start-up, Lucile Packard Children’s Health Plan. Today, Humana provides a range of health care services to millions of members including health maintenance organization health plans, Medicare Advantage plans, Medicare prescription drug plans, Medicaid plans, dental plans, vision plans, life and disability plans and pharmacy benefit management services.
