IndiaAI operates through seven key pillars: the IndiaAI Innovation Centre, AI Compute Capacity, Safe & Trusted AI, Application Development Initiative, Startup Financing, AIKosh Platform, and FutureSkills. The Innovation Centre focuses on developing indigenous Large Language Models (LLMs) and domain-specific AI models. 

The AI Compute Capacity pillar ensures access to AI infrastructure with affordable GPUs, supporting research and startups. Safe & Trusted AI promotes responsible AI governance, and the Application Development Initiative aids the creation of AI solutions for critical sectors like healthcare, agriculture, and governance.
 

The IndiaAI Startup Financing pillar supports AI-focused startups by providing streamlined access to funding. The AIKosh platform serves as a hub for datasets, AI models, and tools to foster innovation. FutureSkills aims to expand AI education across Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities, building AI labs and offering courses to students and professionals.
 

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of IndiaAI is Abhishek Singh, who also serves as the Additional Secretary at MeitY, Government of India. Collaborations with major companies like Microsoft, IBM, and NVIDIA, as well as partnerships with academic institutions and state governments, strengthen India’s AI ecosystem. The platform also features resources such as research reports, case studies, and educational content to engage students, entrepreneurs, and professionals.

History

IndiaAI, the National Portal for Artificial Intelligence in India, was established as a key initiative under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) in 2020. The primary aim of IndiaAI is to foster and strengthen India’s position as a global leader in Artificial Intelligence (AI) by creating an inclusive, robust, and scalable AI ecosystem in the country. This initiative focuses on bridging the gaps in AI infrastructure, research, and innovation and ensuring that AI technologies contribute to India's socio-economic transformation.
 

IndiaAI serves as a platform to unite various stakeholders within the Indian AI ecosystem, including government entities, private companies, academic institutions, startups, and professionals. The portal was launched with the vision to make AI accessible to all, enabling the development of AI applications that could address critical national challenges and improve the overall well-being of society.

IndiaAI immediately gained attention and popularity, and by 2022, it had over 4.5 lakh users and more than 1.2 million page views. The platform had become a significant repository of knowledge, featuring over 1150 articles, 700 news stories, 95 case studies, and 213 videos related to AI.
 

The IndiaAI initiative operates through multiple pillars aimed at tackling different aspects of the AI ecosystem. These pillars include the IndiaAI Innovation Centre, AI Compute Capacity, Safe & Trusted AI, Application Development Initiative, AIKosh Platform, Startup Financing, and FutureSkills. Each of these pillars has a specific role in advancing AI technologies in India.
 

The IndiaAI Innovation Centre was established with the primary objective of developing indigenous AI models, such as Large Language Models (LLMs) and Multimodal Models, that are tailored to India's unique requirements. This includes the development of domain-specific AI models, such as those that cater to agriculture, healthcare, governance, and more. 

 

The centre fosters collaborations between researchers, startups, and institutions to build these models with Indian datasets, ensuring that AI technologies are aligned with global standards while addressing the local challenges faced by the country. In 2025, IndiaAI called for proposals to develop state-of-the-art foundational AI models, which received over 500 submissions. This marks a significant milestone in India’s efforts to build and deploy indigenous AI technologies.
 

Another crucial pillar is AI Compute Capacity, which aims to build a scalable AI ecosystem by enhancing access to AI infrastructure. As part of this initiative, IndiaAI announced the availability of over 18,000 GPUs for AI research and applications at reduced costs, making AI compute more affordable and accessible.


This infrastructure is essential for the development of resource-intensive AI models and provides support to academia, startups, and public-sector institutions that are working on AI-driven projects. The initiative has provided critical AI resources to over 500 users across research institutions, startups, and government entities.


The Safe & Trusted AI pillar focuses on ensuring the responsible and ethical use of AI. It promotes governance frameworks, guidelines, and tools to ensure that AI technologies are developed and deployed in a manner that is safe, transparent, and trustworthy. IndiaAI is actively involved in creating policies and standards that govern the usage of AI in India, ensuring that the benefits of AI are maximised while mitigating any potential risks.
 

The IndiaAI Application Development Initiative is aimed at addressing pressing national challenges through AI. It focuses on scaling up AI applications in sectors such as healthcare, agriculture, climate change, disaster management, and governance. 

 

This initiative works with central ministries, state governments, and public institutions to identify problem statements and build AI solutions. These solutions are expected to have large-scale socio-economic impacts, improving efficiency, accessibility, and outcomes in these sectors. As part of this initiative, the IndiaAI Innovation Challenge was launched to stimulate the development and adoption of AI solutions across these critical sectors.
 

IndiaAI has also established the AIKosh Platform, a unified hub for datasets, AI models, and AI-related tools, aimed at accelerating innovation. The platform serves as a one-stop destination for accessing high-quality, non-personal datasets and AI models, empowering researchers, developers, and startups. AIKosh ensures seamless data discoverability, integration, and use, making it easier for innovators to access resources that can accelerate their AI-driven projects. With over 6,000 registered users, AIKosh has become an essential tool for India’s AI ecosystem.


The IndiaAI Startup Financing pillar is dedicated to supporting deep-tech AI startups by providing them with streamlined access to funding. IndiaAI has worked to create mechanisms that ensure AI startups can quickly access the resources they need to scale and bring their innovative AI solutions to market. The initiative works to fast-track India's AI ecosystem, ensuring that startups have the necessary financial backing to grow and succeed.
 

Finally, the FutureSkills initiative aims to equip the next generation with the skills needed to thrive in the AI-driven economy. It offers AI-related courses, certifications, and training opportunities at various levels, from undergraduate to Ph.D., and focuses on expanding AI education in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities. The initiative also includes the establishment of AI labs in these regions to provide hands-on training and foster AI talent development outside of India’s major metropolitan areas. This pillar plays a crucial role in building a highly skilled AI workforce to drive innovation and technological advancement.
