International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad

The International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad (IIIT-Hyderabad) is a deemed university located in Hyderabad, Telangana, India. It was established in 1998 as the first Indian institute under a public-private partnership model. The institute was developed through a collaboration between the Government of Andhra Pradesh and NASSCOM, with support from the Ministry of Human Resource Development.

Originally named the Indian Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad, it was renamed as the International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad in 2001 upon being granted deemed university status. The institute was designed as a research-focused institution and became the foundation model for several other IIITs established across the country.

IIIT-Hyderabad is structured around research centres rather than traditional departments. Key centres include the Centre for Visual Information Technology, Language Technologies Research Centre, and the Centre for Security, Theory and Algorithms. The institute offers a variety of undergraduate, postgraduate, and dual-degree programmes in fields such as computer science, electronics, and computational natural sciences. The International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad (IIIT-Hyderabad or IIIT-H), was established in 1998 as a non-profit public-private partnership (N-PPP) model, making it the first of its kind in India. The institution was created under a unique initiative by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of Andhra Pradesh, and the National Association of Software and Service Companies (NASSCOM). The government provided land and infrastructure to support its establishment.

Ajay Prakash Sawhney, who served as the Secretary of Information Technology for the Andhra Pradesh state government, played a key role in conceptualising and overseeing the initial development of the institute. He also held the position of Special Officer for IIIT Hyderabad during its foundation. Rajeev Sangal, an academician and expert in natural language processing, was appointed as the founding Director. He developed the academic structure and syllabus and led the institute until April 2013.

Originally named the Indian Institute of Information Technology Hyderabad, the institute was renamed as the International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad in 2001 when it was granted the status of a deemed university by the Department of Higher Education, Government of India. It became the foundational model for the network of 20 Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs) developed across the country under similar frameworks.

IIIT-Hyderabad was developed with a strong emphasis on research from its inception. Unlike traditional university models structured around departments, IIIT-H functions through research centres and laboratories. These include the Applied Artificial Intelligence Research Centre, the Centre for Security, Theory and Algorithms, and the Earthquake Engineering Research Centre, among others.

The institute expanded its academic offerings through undergraduate, postgraduate, and dual degree programmes. Dual degree programmes allow students to earn both a Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech Honours) and a Master of Science (MS by Research) over a five-year period. The Postgraduate Student Status Programme was also introduced to enable professionals in the Hyderabad region to study selected courses without full-time enrolment.

Admissions to the institute are based on multiple pathways including JEE Main, UGEE, DASA, Olympiad recognition, and lateral entry schemes. For postgraduate studies, the institute conducts its own Postgraduate Entrance Exam (PGEE).

The institute celebrated its Silver Jubilee in September 2023, marking 25 years since its inception. The event included a fire-side chat with former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and commemorated individuals who contributed to the institute's development.

At the undergraduate level, IIIT-Hyderabad offers two primary Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) degrees: Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) and Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE). The institute also offers several dual-degree programmes, which are integrated five-year courses combining B.Tech and Master of Science (MS by Research). These include B.Tech in CSE + MS by Research in CSE, ECE, Computational Linguistics, Computational Natural Sciences, and Exact Humanities. These dual-degree options enable students to undertake research alongside their undergraduate studies.

For postgraduate students, IIIT-Hyderabad offers Master of Technology (M.Tech) programmes in Computer Science and Engineering, and in Computer Science with specialisation in Information Security. Another key offering is the M.Tech in Product Design and Management, aimed at students interested in innovation and development in the technology sector. In addition, the institute provides MS by Research programmes in disciplines such as Computer Science and Engineering, ECE, Computational Linguistics, Bioinformatics, and IT in Building Sciences and Power Systems. These programmes are designed for students seeking a research-oriented postgraduate education.

The doctoral programmes at IIIT-Hyderabad allow students to pursue advanced research in various domains. PhD programmes are available in areas including Computer Science and Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Computational Natural Sciences, Spatial Informatics, Cognitive Science, and IT and Society. These are supported by dedicated research centres and expert faculty, with an emphasis on interdisciplinary collaboration.

In addition to its regular programmes, the institute also offers the Postgraduate Student Status Programme (PGSSP), which is intended for working professionals in the Hyderabad area. This scheme allows individuals to enrol in up to two courses per semester without committing to a full-time degree. IIIT-Hyderabad also participates in the Master of Science in Information Technology (MSIT) programme, a collaborative course conducted by a consortium of institutions with separate admission procedures.

The International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad (IIIT-H) has been recognised in both national and international rankings for its academic and research contributions.

In the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2024, IIIT-H secured the 47th position among engineering institutions in India. This reflects its consistent performance in areas such as teaching, learning, research, and graduation outcomes.

According to the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2025, IIIT-H is placed in the 601–800 band globally. In subject-specific rankings, it falls within the 401–500 band for Computer Science and the 501–600 band for Engineering.

The International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad (IIIT-Hyderabad) maintains a structured and research-oriented curriculum that aligns closely with industry requirements.

During the 2024 placement drive, a total of 414 students registered for placements. Of these, 411 students secured employment offers, reflecting a placement rate of over 99%. The highest package offered stood at INR 105 lakh per annum, while the average package was INR 26.34 lakh per annum.

The placement process at IIIT-H is managed by its Career Guidance Centre, which supports students in preparing for interviews, securing internships, and connecting with industry partners. The institute also benefits from its emphasis on research, which equips students with practical and analytical skills sought by employers.
