The Interpublic Group of Companies, Inc. was founded in 1902 and is headquartered in New York, New York.

History

Interpublic Group (IPG) traces its roots back to the merger of H.K. McCann Co. and Erickson Co. in New York City on October 2, 1930, forming McCann-Erickson—the dominant advertising agency of its time. The pivotal year of 1960 witnessed McCann's restructuring into four units, each reporting to a newly established holding company. By 1961, the agency assumed the name Interpublic Group, pioneering the concept of a marketing services management holding company. As global strategies gained prominence in the 1970s, McCann-Erickson consolidated its domestic and international branches under the umbrella of IPG.

IPG faced notable challenges in the early 2000s, marked by a $115 million settlement in 2003 due to shareholder lawsuits related to accounting irregularities. The company underwent restructuring, with McCann-Erickson World Group rebranded as McCann Worldgroup in 2004. Earnings restatements in 2005 and 2006 and the disposal of businesses characterized this period. Strategic acquisitions included Deutsch Inc. in 2000, True North Communications in 2001, and the purchase of Acxiom's Marketing Solutions business in 2018. Leadership changes were notable, with Phillippe Krakowsky succeeding Michael I. Roth as IPG's CEO on January 1, 2021.

Confidentiality has been a hallmark of IPG's client relations, particularly in the oil industry. In 2020, when prompted by Reuters to disclose its client list, IPG maintained a discreet stance, refusing to divulge details. This approach underscores the agency's commitment to client privacy and its position as a major player in the dynamic landscape of advertising and marketing services.

Mission

Interpublic Group (IPG) articulates a compelling mission that centers on becoming one of the foremost diverse and inclusive companies globally. At the heart of their mission is a commitment to fostering diversity and inclusivity in a manner that is both systematic and structured. Recognizing the complexity of the challenge, IPG underscores the importance of this strategic approach, emphasizing that such a method is vital for instigating lasting cultural change throughout the organization. This deliberate and systematic approach aligns with the belief that enduring transformation requires a comprehensive strategy that permeates every facet of the company.
