The company has a strategic partnership agreement with China Nonferrous Metal Mining (Group) Co., Ltd. to examine exploration, development, and acquisition of mineral projects, as well as production, smelting, and logistics opportunities in Africa. Ivanhoe Mines Ltd. was formerly known as Ivanplats Limited and changed its name to Ivanhoe Mines Ltd. in August 2013. The company was incorporated in 1993 and is headquartered in Vancouver, Canada.
History
Ivanhoe Mines was founded by Robert M. Friedland in 1994. Before that, the company had been involved in exploration and development projects in several different countries. The first major mine discovery for Ivanhoe Mines was the Oyu Tolgoi copper-gold porphyry in Mongolia. This discovery also attracted the attention of Rio Tinto, who eventually purchased a majority interest in the project in 2009.
Mission
Focused on advancing its three principal, joint-venture projects in Southern Africa: the development of new mines at the Kamoa-Kakula copper discovery in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and the Platreef platinum-palladium-nickel-copper-gold discovery in South Africa; and the extensive redevelopment and upgrading of the historic Kipushi zinc-copper-germanium-silver mine, also in the DRC.
Vision
The company also is exploring for new copper discoveries on its wholly-owned Western Foreland exploration licences, adjacent to the Kamoa-Kakula mining licence.
