Joseph was born and raised in Toronto. He graduated from Princeton University with a degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, and worked in the Princeton Robotics Lab at Tomandandy Music, developing an autonomous music composition tool, and at the private research firm, Vision Applications Inc., building autonomous mobile robots.

As a software engineer and consultant, Joseph worked with eMagine on the Identrus cryptographic payments and trade finance network project and was involved in the founding and operating of a hedge fund. He held positions as Director of the New York office of Blacksmith Software Consulting and VP of Technology in Private Wealth Management at Goldman Sachs. Biography

Joseph Lubin is a prominent figure in the blockchain and cryptocurrency industry, best known as the CEO and Founder of ConsenSys. Born on September 7, 1964, in Toronto, Canada, Lubin has played a significant role in the development and popularization of decentralized technologies.

Joseph's educational background is diverse and reflects his multidisciplinary approach. He graduated with a degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from Princeton University in 1987. During his time at Princeton, he developed a keen interest in robotics and artificial intelligence, which would later influence his work in the blockchain space.

After completing his studies, Lubin embarked on a successful career in software engineering and technology. He worked at various companies, including Princeton's Robotics Lab, where he focused on artificial intelligence and autonomous mobile robots. Lubin later held positions at Vision Applications Inc. and Blacksmith Software Consulting, gaining valuable experience in software development and entrepreneurship.

In 2014, Joseph's life took a transformative turn when he discovered blockchain technology and its potential to revolutionize industries. He became deeply intrigued by the Ethereum blockchain and its smart contract capabilities, which enable programmable and decentralized applications (dApps) to be built on the platform.

Driven by his vision for the future of blockchain technology, Lubin co-founded ConsenSys in October 2014. ConsenSys is a blockchain software technology company that incubates, develops, and invests in decentralized applications and infrastructure. The company has grown to become one of the largest and most influential blockchain organizations globally, with offices in major cities around the world.

Under Lubin's leadership, ConsenSys has played a pivotal role in advancing the adoption and utilization of blockchain technology. The company has developed numerous groundbreaking projects and initiatives, including MetaMask, an Ethereum wallet and gateway to the decentralized web, and Infura, a scalable blockchain infrastructure provider. ConsenSys has also supported the development of decentralized finance (DeFi) projects, enterprise blockchain solutions, and collaborations with governments and organizations across various sectors.

Joseph's influence extends beyond ConsenSys. He has been actively involved in promoting blockchain technology and fostering its global ecosystem. He is a co-founder of the Ethereum Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting the Ethereum protocol and its community. Additionally, Lubin has been a prominent speaker at conferences and events worldwide, where he shares his insights on blockchain technology, decentralized applications, and the future of finance.

As a strong believer in the potential of decentralized technologies, Lubin envisions a future where blockchain will transform industries, empower individuals, and reshape the global economy. He continues to drive innovation and collaboration within the blockchain ecosystem, working towards a more decentralized and inclusive world.

Joseph Lubin's contributions to the blockchain industry have earned him recognition and accolades. His visionary leadership, technical expertise, and entrepreneurial spirit have made him a respected figure and influential thought leader in the decentralized technology space.

Vision

Inspired by Satoshi Nakamoto’s Bitcoin white paper and the potential of distributed systems to “shatter the silos of power and re-balance the information asymmetries that disadvantage so many,” Joseph delved into the incipient blockchain community. He was a primary figure in the creation and launch of Ethereum alongside fellow Torontonian Vitalik Buterin in 2014. Eventually, he moved to build an ecosystem around the nascent technology, in part by launching ConsenSys.

“Bitcoin presented the broad strokes vision,” Joseph told the New York Times in 2016. “Ethereum presented the crystallization of how to deliver that vision.”

Recognition and Awards
In February 2018, Forbes estimated Lubin's net worth in cryptocurrency to be between one and five billion dollars. ConsenSys has been a central figure in the establishment of the Enterprise Ethereum Alliance, a global standards organisation for business applications of Ethereum technology. The EEA now has over 500 members, including global business leaders including Accenture, CME Group, Deloitte, Ernst & Young, Intel, banks like JPMorgan, Microsoft, Pfizer, law firms like Schulte Roth & Zabel LLP, T-Mobile, and Wipro. The Brooklyn Project and projects like the EU Blockchain Observatory and Forum have led research and regulation in the United States and Europe, ensuring a more equitable blockchain industry. ConsenSys has also been noted for its commitment to decentralised organisation in addition to its myriad successful spinouts, projects, and initiatives. “The company structure is inspired by Lubin’s utopian ideals,” states Newsweek. “Employees choose their own titles, and instead of a traditional deep hierarchy, there’s a flatter, agreements-based governance structure, a decentralized system of management where power is distributed among self-organizing teams.”
