Junior Chamber International

Junior Chamber International (JCI) was founded in 1915 as the Young Men's Progressive Civic Association (YMPCA). It later changed its name to Junior Citizens and then to Junior Chamber of Commerce. In 1944, JCI became an international organization at the Inter-American Congress in Mexico City. JCI celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2015, highlighting its commitment to empowering youth and creating positive change globally.

The history of Junior Chamber International (JCI) traces back to the initiatives of Henry Giessenbier Jr., a proactive young individual who sought to create opportunities for the youth in his community. At the age of 18, Giessenbier established the Herculaneum Dance Club, which served as a social outlet for young people.

On October 13, 1915, a significant milestone in the JCI Movement occurred when 32 men gathered at the Mission Inn in St. Louis, USA, to form the Young Men's Progressive Civic Association (YMPCA). This marked the official birth of the JCI Movement. Initially, the YMPCA gained recognition from the local community, but it wasn't until November 30, 1915, that the organization received official recognition after joining the Mayor's Conference of Civic Organizations.

Within a year, the YMPCA underwent a name change and became known as the Junior Citizens. Later on, after affiliating with the St. Louis Chamber of Commerce, the organization adopted the name "Junior Chamber of Commerce." This affiliation with the Chamber of Commerce allowed for increased collaboration and support for the Junior Chamber's initiatives.

A significant turning point in the history of JCI occurred on December 11, 1944, when the Inter-American Congress convened in Mexico City. Representatives from various countries, including the United States, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, and Panama, came together to establish Henry Giessenbier's civic association as an international organization. Thus, Junior Chamber International was officially formed, recognizing the remarkable growth and impact of Giessenbier's vision over the course of 24 years.

In 2015, JCI celebrated its 100th anniversary, commemorating a century of empowering young individuals and fostering positive change around the globe.
