Kaan Basaran

Kaan Basaran is an accomplished financial executive with a wealth of experience in the banking industry. With his expertise in various leadership roles, Kaan has been contributing significantly to the success of renowned financial institutions, including UniCredit Menkul Degerler, Credit Suisse, and Merrill Lynch.

In his present role as the Head of Origination and Sales for Turkey at Nomura Bank International in London, Kaan bridges the European markets with his extensive Turkish network. 

Kaan's leadership and expertise in institutional client management and sales contributed significantly to the success of the European emerging markets division of various global brands in Turkey. 

Beginning his career in auditing at Coopers & Lybrand, Kaan has has served at various financial roles, including the Director at Rabobank International in London and at Citibank N.A. in London, where he was part of the Emerging Market and Structuring Teams. 

Kaan is also a board member of the British Chamber of Commerce in Turkey, where he benchmarks his expertise and extensive business network to bridge European and Turkish markets.

Basaran holds a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Bogaziçi University in Istanbul, a Master of Science in Management from Imperial College, and a PhD in Finance from the Centre for Quantitative Finance at Imperial College, London. 

Kaan Basaran began his career as an Auditor at Coopers & Lybrand in London in 1989. After gaining valuable experience in the Audit Department, he earned a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from Bogaziçi University in Istanbul, Turkey, in 1988. 

In 1990, Basaran joined Citibank, N.A. in London as a Vice President in the CEEMEA Derivatives Coverage division, specializing in Financial Engineering, Fixed Income, Equity, and Commodity Derivatives. 

After eight years at Citibank, Basaran joined Rabobank International in London in 1998. He served as a Director in the Emerging Markets Derivatives Structuring team, further expanding his expertise in the field.

In 1999, Basaran joined Merrill Lynch International in London as a Managing Director. During his six-year tenure, he took on pivotal roles, serving as the Head of European Emerging Markets Fixed Income Sales and Co-Head of EEMEA Fixed Income Client Coverage. His leadership and contributions significantly enhanced the company's fixed income sales operations within the European emerging markets.

Continuing his studies at Imperial College, he obtained an MSc and PhD in Management and Finance, completing his academic journey in 2004.

Basaran, then, assumed the position of CEO at Credit Suisse Turkey in 2006. In this role, he oversaw a diverse range of responsibilities, including Fixed Income Coverage for Turkey and Balkans, Turkish Principal Investments, Equity Linked Financing, Corporate Finance, and Turkish Equity Research and Brokerage Activities. Basaran's strategic vision and expertise played a crucial role in the success of Credit Suisse's operations in Turkey.

In 2009, Basaran became the CEO and Board Member of UniCredit Menkul Degerler in Istanbul, Turkey. He spearheaded multiple functions within the organization, including Corporate Finance Advisory, Debt and Equity Capital Markets, Financial Advisory for Energy and Infrastructure Projects, Cash and Derivative Sales to Institutional Investors in Turkish Equities, and Equity Research.

In September 2012, Nomura Bank International appointed Kaan as the Head of Origination & Sales, Turkey at Nomura International plc in London. In this role, he played a pivotal role in driving business growth and managing key relationships within the Turkish market.

Currently, Kaan Basaran is the Managing Director and Senior Country Representative at Nomura Bank International, Istanbul Liaison Office, a role he has held since June 2014. His responsibilities include managing the operations of the bank's Istanbul office and serving as a representative of Nomura Bank International in Turkey.
