History
Kalasalingam Academy of Research and Education (KARE) was established in 1984 by Kalasalingam and Anandam Ammal Charities. The founding chairman, "Kalvi Vallal" Thiru T. Kalasalingam, was a freedom fighter and philanthropist committed to advancing education and societal development. The institution initially began as Arulmigu Kalasalingam College of Engineering, focusing on engineering education.
Located in the foothills of the Western Ghats in Tamil Nadu, KARE has grown considerably over the years. In 2006, the college was granted deemed university status by the University Grants Commission (UGC), marking a significant milestone in its history. This transition allowed KARE to broaden its academic offerings and enhance its research capabilities, contributing to its standing as a leading educational institution in India.
In November 2017, following a UGC directive for institutions with deemed university status to remove the word "university" from their names, KARE was renamed Kalasalingam Academy of Research and Education. This change emphasised KARE's focus on research and higher education while preserving its legacy of excellence.
KARE has also been at the forefront of educational innovation. It was the first institution in India to introduce a special B.Tech program for differently-abled students, particularly those with speech and hearing impairments. This initiative demonstrates KARE's commitment to inclusive education.
KARE's ongoing pursuit of academic and research excellence is reflected in its numerous accolades and accreditations. The institution has been re-accredited by NAAC with an 'A++' grade, and several of its undergraduate programs are accredited by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA) under Tier-1. Furthermore, KARE has received funding from the Department of Science and Technology (DST) to establish the National Center for Advanced Research in Discrete Mathematics, further reinforcing its position in research and innovation.
