History

Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) University was established in 1992 as an Industrial Training Institute in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, India. Founded by Dr. Achyuta Samanta, a visionary and philanthropist, the institute started with humble beginnings and a seed capital of ?5000 (approximately US$66.8). Dr Samanta, driven by a vision to make a difference in society through education, embarked on a journey that would transform the landscape of higher education in India.

Initially established to provide vocational training, KIIT quickly evolved to meet the demands of the education sector. In 1997, it took a significant stride forward by introducing undergraduate and postgraduate courses in engineering, management, and computer applications. This marked the beginning of KIIT's transition from an industrial training institute to a comprehensive educational institution.

The year 2007 proved to be a big step in KIIT's history, as it witnessed an expansion of its academic offerings. Several new schools were added to its umbrella, including the School of Law, Biotechnology, Medical Sciences, Dental Sciences, Nursing, Mass Communication, Film and Media, Fashion, and KIIT International School. This expansion broadened IT's scope and attracted students from diverse academic backgrounds, establishing it as a multidisciplinary institution of higher learning.

Over the years, KIIT experienced exponential growth, both in terms of infrastructure and academic excellence. From its modest beginnings in two rented rooms with 12 students and 2 staff, it transformed into a sprawling academic township spread over 36 square kilometres. The campus, characterised by lush greenery and state-of-the-art facilities, became a beacon of educational excellence in the region.

One of IT's defining features is its unwavering commitment to quality education and research. Accredited as a deemed university by the Ministry of HRD, Government of India, in 2004, KIIT has consistently made efforts for academic excellence and innovation. It has received accreditations and affiliations from prestigious national and international bodies, including the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), USA, and the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), UK.

KIIT's dedication to academic excellence has been reflected in its impressive rankings on both national and international platforms. It has been ranked among the top universities in India by various ranking agencies, including the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) and QS World University Rankings.
