Summary

KEATH.ai is a UK-based educational software company founded in 2018. Located in Guildford, England, the company focuses on revolutionising the educational assessment process using artificial intelligence (AI). Its platform provides personalised learning experiences through AI-powered assessments, customisable grading rubrics, and efficient feedback delivery. By integrating a "human-in-the-loop" model, KEATH.ai ensures that AI-generated feedback is reviewed and finalised by educators, enhancing accuracy and promoting human judgement.

The company started as a spin-out project from Surrey University, with a mission to improve the efficiency of educational assessments and feedback. KEATH’s approach, known as the DEFT (Developing Engagement with Feedback Toolkit) methodology, aims to provide proactive, insightful feedback that helps students understand and act upon it. This system benefits educators by automating routine tasks, allowing them to focus on more meaningful student interaction and teaching.

KEATH.ai’s platform includes AI tools for scoring essays, customising grading rubrics, and analysing data to support educators in their grading processes. The AI can learn from as few as 10 manually graded submissions, ensuring that it mirrors the educator's grading style and rubric. The company offers tailored solutions for universities, schools, and exam boards, with flexible pricing based on the institution's size and requirements.

KEATH.ai has raised funding from Stella Capital, with the latest round being Series A in October 2024. The leadership team includes Joey Lin (Founder & CEO), Imran Ali-Farzal (Co-CEO), and Dr Chris Trace (Chief Academic Officer). KEATH.ai is committed to transforming the future of educational assessments, aiming to set new standards in precision and insight for educators worldwide.

History

KEATH.ai was founded in 2018 as a result of research conducted at the University of Surrey. A team of educators and technologists worked together to explore how artificial intelligence could enhance assessment and feedback in higher education.

The company was officially incorporated in the UK on 25 October 2023 as KEATH.AI Ltd, with its registered office located at the Surrey Technology Centre in Guildford, England. The team initially developed a tool called the "Key Evaluation & Assessment Tools Hub," which later evolved into KEATH.ai. In November 2023, the University of Surrey publicly introduced the tool, describing it as an AI-driven academic marking platform designed to provide rapid and efficient feedback on student work.

The founders of KEATH.ai are Joey Lin, who serves as the CEO, and Imran Ali-Farzal, the Co-CEO. After the company's incorporation, KEATH.ai expanded its product features to include customizable assessment models and a "train from ten samples" feature, which allows institutions to upload a small set of manually graded submissions to train the AI model.

KEATH.ai also implemented a "human-in-the-loop" workflow, enabling educators to review and finalise AI-generated feedback before it is used for grading. The company developed the DEFT (Developing Engagement with Feedback Toolkit) approach, focusing on improving feedback quality and student engagement.

In early 2024, the company moved its registered office from Newcastle to Guildford. In June 2024, Dr. Kim Sze Tan was appointed a director, further strengthening the leadership team. KEATH.ai underwent a capital restructure in January 2025 and raised additional funds.

In May 2025, the company announced a collaboration with Jisc, the UK's digital education body, to launch a pilot for the 2025-26 academic year. This pilot allows institutions to use KEATH.ai's platform for six months, focusing on formative assessments, essays, reports, and dissertations.

As of late 2025, KEATH.ai remains an active private limited company, offering AI-powered assessment and feedback solutions to universities, schools, and exam boards. The company is positioned to transform the educational assessment process through AI technology while maintaining a human touch. With enterprise pricing, customizable models, and flexible solutions, KEATH.ai continues to innovate and expand its reach in the educational technology sector.

Mission

KEATH.ai's mission is to revolutionise the way assessments are conducted in education by integrating artificial intelligence. The platform aims to provide faster, more accurate, and personalised feedback to students, helping educators save time and improve learning outcomes. By offering customisable grading models and a "human-in-the-loop" workflow, KEATH.ai ensures that AI supports, rather than replaces, the expertise of educators. The goal is to make educational assessment more efficient, accessible, and insightful for both educators and students, helping institutions enhance their assessment processes while promoting deeper engagement with feedback.

Vision

KEATH.ai envisions a future where AI is seamlessly integrated into education to improve assessment and feedback worldwide. The company aims to set new standards in educational assessment by making the process more precise and personalised for each student. KEATH.ai strives to empower educators, giving them the tools they need to deliver high-quality, timely feedback that drives student progress. By continuously evolving its technology, KEATH.ai seeks to be at the forefront of educational innovation, making a positive impact on learning outcomes and helping institutions worldwide adapt to the changing landscape of education.

Products and Services

KEATH.ai offers a range of products and services designed to improve the way educational assessments are carried out using artificial intelligence. The platform aims to help educators deliver fast, personalised feedback while maintaining the accuracy of traditional grading. KEATH.ai’s products focus on automating grading, feedback, and data analysis to save time and enhance the overall learning experience. Below is an overview of the key products and services.

AI Assessment Platform- KEATH.ai’s main product is its AI-powered assessment platform. This tool automates the grading of student work, helping educators provide quick and accurate feedback. The platform is flexible and can be used by schools, universities, and exam boards, offering a solution that meets the needs of each institution.

Customisable Assessment Models- KEATH.ai allows institutions to create their own grading models. Educators can upload their own grading rubrics, and the system will train on a small set of manually graded assignments to match the educator's grading style. This customisation ensures that the platform works well with the standards of the institution and can be used for a variety of tasks, such as essays, reports, and projects.

Human-in-the-Loop Workflow- A key feature of KEATH.ai is its "human-in-the-loop" workflow. The AI provides initial feedback and grades, but educators are able to review and make changes before the final grade is given. This ensures that the expertise of the educator is still part of the process, combining the speed of AI with the judgment of professionals. It helps build trust in the technology, as educators are in control of the final results.

DEFT (Developing Engagement with Feedback Toolkit)- KEATH.ai uses the DEFT approach to improve feedback. The focus is on providing feedback that helps students understand their strengths and areas to improve. This approach encourages active learning, making feedback a tool for growth, rather than just an evaluation of performance. This method helps students take action based on the feedback they receive.

Data Analysis and Reporting- KEATH.ai also includes tools for data analysis, which provide educators with insights into student performance. The platform collects and organises data from assessments, offering detailed reports that help identify trends and measure learning outcomes. This helps educators make better decisions about how to improve teaching methods and track the effectiveness of their assessments.

Scalable for Different Institutions- KEATH.ai is designed to work for both small and large institutions. The platform offers flexible pricing plans depending on the size of the institution and how much of the platform is being used. It can be tailored to fit the needs of a single educator, a department, or an entire university.

Integrations and Support- KEATH.ai can integrate with existing Learning Management Systems (LMS) and other educational tools, making it easy to adopt without disrupting current systems. The platform also provides support and training to help educators make the most of the features available. The KEATH.ai team is available to assist with any questions and ensure that users can use the platform effectively.
