Kenya Power, commonly referred to as KPLC, is a state corporation in charge of electricity transmission and distribution throughout the country, as well as related services such as bill collection. The company is wholly owned by the Kenyan Government, and is listed on the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE). It is the largest electricity provider in East Africa, with an installed base of 1,629,184 customers as of June 2020, and a network of 8,873 kilometers of overhead lines and 20,559 kilometers of low and medium voltage cable lines.
History

Kenya Power is one of the largest electricity distribution and transmission companies in East Africa. It was established in April 1927 under the Kenya Power & Lighting Company Act as a private company to generate and supply electric power in the East African country. It was later nationalized under the Kenya Power and Lighting Company Act of 1969, making it a state-owned and -operated utility. Since then, the company has been responsible for electricity transmission and distribution in Kenya.

In 2020, it was named the ‘Best Investor Friendly Utility Company’ in the Financial Times Africa Energy Award. It has also received the ISO 50001:2011 Energy Management System Certification in 2015, and the International Electrotechnical Commission Certification in 2017.
