History

King George's Medical University, situated in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, India, was established in 1906 and was founded as King George's Medical College. King George V, who was the Prince of Wales at the time, laid the foundation stone to commemorate the occasion. Though the inaugural event was postponed until January 1912, the college opened its doors in 1911.

Initially under the governance of the Government of the United Provinces, the college awarded degrees through Allahabad University. In 1921, it transitioned to Lucknow University, marking a significant shift in its administration.

Over the years, the institution underwent several transformations, mirroring the political landscape of Uttar Pradesh. In 2002, under the leadership of Mayawati of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), it was granted university status and renamed Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj Medical University (CSMMU). However, this name change was short-lived, as in 2003, under Mulayam Singh Yadav's government, it was rechristened as King George's Medical University (KGMU).

The university's name continued to oscillate with changes in political leadership, reverting to CSMMU when the BSP won the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly election in 2007, only to return to KGMU when control shifted back to the Samajwadi Party in 2012 under Akhilesh Yadav's government.

Throughout its journey, the university has expanded its offerings and facilities, evolving into a comprehensive medical institution. It encompasses faculties of Medical Sciences and Dental Sciences, along with institutes for Paramedical Sciences and Nursing.

The campus, steeped in architectural heritage, boasts notable structures designed by Sir Swinton Jacob in the Indo-Saracenic style, blending seamlessly with the historical landscape of Lucknow.
