History

Koneru Lakshmaiah Education Foundation (KLEF), widely known as KL University, has a rich and inspiring history that dates back to its inception in the early 1980s. The journey began in 1980 when Koneru Lakshmaiah, a visionary industrialist and educationalist, established the Koneru Lakshmaiah Charities. He aimed to create an institution that would provide quality engineering education in Andhra Pradesh, which at the time had very few private engineering colleges.

In the academic year 1980-81, the institution opened its doors as KL College of Engineering in Vijayawada. It quickly gained a reputation for its strong emphasis on academic excellence and practical learning. Over the years, the college steadily expanded its infrastructure, faculty, and student body, earning recognition for its high standards of education.

A significant milestone was reached in 2006 when KL College of Engineering was granted autonomous status by the University Grants Commission (UGC). This autonomy allowed the college to design its curriculum and innovate in teaching methodologies, thereby enhancing the educational experience for its students. The newfound autonomy was a stepping stone to greater achievements.

In 2009, another pivotal moment arrived when the college was conferred with Deemed to be University status by the UGC and the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India. This recognition marked the transition from KL College of Engineering to Koneru Lakshmaiah Education Foundation Deemed to be University. With this status, the university gained the ability to award its degrees and further expand its academic offerings.

The growth and success of KLEF can be attributed to the visionary leadership of its founders. The late co-founder, Er. Koneru Lakshmaiah, and the founder, Er. Koneru Satyanarayana was instrumental in shaping the institution's mission and vision. Their dedication to creating a premier educational institution laid the foundation for KLEF's future achievements.

In 2012, the university received accreditation from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with an 'A' grade, further cementing its reputation for quality education. This accreditation was renewed in 2018 when NAAC re-accredited KLEF with an 'A++' grade, a testament to the continuous improvement and high standards maintained by the university.

The university's commitment to quality education and research led to its designation as a Category I Institution by UGC and MHRD in 2019. This status brought numerous benefits, including greater autonomy and the ability to launch new programmes without prior approval from the regulatory bodies.

KLEF's main campus is located on a picturesque 100-acre site along the Buckingham Canal of the Krishna River, just eight kilometres from Vijayawada city. The campus, aptly named "Green Fields," is known for its lush greenery and eco-friendly environment, providing an ideal setting for academic and personal growth.

In addition to its main campus, KLEF has expanded its footprint with off-campus centres. In 2017, the first off-campus centre was established in Hyderabad at Moinabad, Aziznagar Road. This centre initially operated from a temporary facility but is set to move to a permanent campus in Bachupally. In 2022, a second off-campus centre was inaugurated in Bowrampet Village, Medchal-Malkajgiri District, Greater Hyderabad.

Throughout its history, KLEF has remained dedicated to its mission of providing quality higher education, fostering research, and promoting innovation. The university has consistently adapted to the changing educational landscape, introducing new specialisations and programmes to meet the needs of society and industry. It has also built strong links with international and national organisations to enhance its academic and research capabilities.

Today, KLEF stands as one of the leading private universities in India, known for its academic excellence, robust research culture, and commitment to sustainability and social responsibility. The university's journey from a modest engineering college to a renowned Deemed-to-be University is a testament to the vision and perseverance of its founders and the dedication of its faculty, staff, and students.
