The journey began in 1980 when Koneru Lakshmaiah, a visionary industrialist and educationalist, established the Koneru Lakshmaiah Charities. He aimed to create an institution that would provide quality engineering education in Andhra Pradesh, which at the time had very few private engineering colleges.

In the academic year 1980-81, the institution opened its doors as KL College of Engineering in Vijayawada. It quickly gained a reputation for its strong emphasis on academic excellence and practical learning. Over the years, the college steadily expanded its infrastructure, faculty, and student body, earning recognition for its high standards of education.

A significant milestone was reached in 2006 when KL College of Engineering was granted autonomous status by the University Grants Commission (UGC). In addition to its main campus, KLEF has expanded its footprint with off-campus centres. In 2017, the first off-campus centre was established in Hyderabad at Moinabad, Aziznagar Road. This centre initially operated from a temporary facility but is set to move to a permanent campus in Bachupally. In 2022, a second off-campus centre was inaugurated in Bowrampet Village, Medchal-Malkajgiri District, Greater Hyderabad.
