Kyndryl Holdings, Inc. is a global technology services company headquartered in New York City, United States. Founded in 2021 after its separation from IBM, it is one of the world’s largest providers of IT infrastructure services. The company designs, builds, manages, and modernises critical technology systems for enterprises across various sectors, including finance, telecommunications, retail, automotive, and transportation. Kyndryl operates in 63 countries and manages more than 400 data centres worldwide, serving most of the Fortune 100 companies.

Kyndryl focuses on six key areas of managed services: Cloud, Applications Data and AI, Core Enterprise and zCloud, Digital Workplace, Network and Edge, and Security and Resiliency. Its services help organisations migrate to the cloud, optimise infrastructure, enhance cybersecurity, and modernise digital workplaces. The company’s platform, Kyndryl Bridge, provides open integration for IT operations, while Kyndryl Consult delivers strategic technology consulting and digital transformation support.

The company is led by Chairman and CEO Martin Schroeter, with a global leadership team overseeing strategy, operations, marketing, and technology. Kyndryl’s mission is to deliver reliable and innovative enterprise systems that drive business growth and digital transformation. Its vision focuses on building systems that are reliable, resilient, extensible, and future-ready.

Kyndryl has developed partnerships with major technology providers, including Microsoft, Google Cloud, and AWS, to accelerate hybrid cloud adoption and AI integration. It has also signed long-term agreements with companies such as Delta Air Lines to strengthen IT resiliency.

The organisation operates under “The Kyndryl Way,” a culture based on six core principles—restless, empathetic, devoted, flat, fast, and focused. It promotes inclusion, trust, and employee well-being through initiatives like Kinship at Kyndryl and Be Well. Kyndryl is publicly traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol KD and continues to advance technology systems that power human progress.

History

Kyndryl Holdings, Inc. began as part of IBM’s Global Technology Services division, which had been one of IBM’s largest business units, providing IT infrastructure management and technology support to clients worldwide.

In October 2020, IBM announced its plan to separate this division into a new, independent company to focus on managed infrastructure services. The intention was to allow both organisations to concentrate on their core strengths—IBM on hybrid cloud and artificial intelligence, and the new entity on IT infrastructure management.

In April 2021, IBM revealed the name of the new company as Kyndryl. The name was created from two words—“kin,” representing strong relationships and connections, and “tendril,” symbolising growth. This reflected the company’s purpose of building close partnerships with customers while expanding global technology capabilities.

On 4 November 2021, Kyndryl officially completed its separation from IBM and started trading as an independent company on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol KD. Martin Schroeter, former Chief Financial Officer and President of IBM Global Services, became the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the new company.

At its launch, Kyndryl served about 4,400 clients, including 75 per cent of Fortune 100 companies, across 63 countries. It managed over 400 data centres and employed tens of thousands of professionals. Its services covered six main areas: cloud, core enterprise and zCloud, applications data and AI, digital workplace, network and edge, and security and resiliency. These services helped organisations operate, manage, and modernise their essential IT infrastructure.

Since becoming independent, Kyndryl has built strategic partnerships to expand its capabilities. In 2021, it entered into a global alliance with Microsoft to drive cloud adoption and digital transformation. This was followed by partnerships with Google Cloud and Amazon Web Services, focusing on hybrid cloud, AI, and data analytics. The company also signed a five-year agreement with Delta Air Lines in February 2023 to enhance the airline’s IT resiliency and scalability.

To support its consulting and integration services, Kyndryl launched Kyndryl Bridge, an open integration platform that combines data insights, automation, and AI to help customers manage their IT operations. It also introduced Kyndryl Consult, a division offering advisory and implementation support to help clients plan and execute digital transformation projects.

Kyndryl’s leadership has focused on building a distinct culture known as “The Kyndryl Way,” which emphasises responsibility, trust, inclusivity, and collaboration. The company promotes employee well-being and diversity through programmes such as Kinship at Kyndryl and Kyndryl Be Well. It has developed inclusion networks that operate in more than 30 countries, supporting communities such as women, veterans, and neurodiverse professionals.

In 2024, Kyndryl continued to expand its sustainability efforts, aiming to reduce carbon emissions and promote environmentally responsible business operations. It has also been recognised as one of Newsweek’s Global Top 100 Most Loved Workplaces for two consecutive years, highlighting its commitment to employee engagement and inclusion.

As of 2025, Kyndryl remains one of the world’s largest IT infrastructure service providers. With operations across multiple continents and strong alliances with leading technology partners, it continues to help organisations modernise their systems, strengthen cybersecurity, and accelerate digital transformation. The company’s present focus is on combining artificial intelligence with infrastructure management to create reliable, scalable, and efficient enterprise systems that support innovation and global progress.
